Hi!

There was some discussion on #satchmo yesterday about the possibility
to replace trml2pdf with some more (Unicode) capable tool.

After browsing mailing list archive I stumbled upon wiki page which
gives reference for Pisa (http://www.xhtml2pdf.com/) project which
uses Reportlab (http://www.reportlab.org/) and it claims: "Best
support for frameworks like Django, Turbogears, CherryPy, Pylons,
WSGI"

I cannot say much more being still Python/Django noob looking forward
to use Sachmo for my future site(s) and having need to be able to use
Unicode encoding (utf-8) which is, according to 'Generating unicode
with trml2pdf' thread (http://groups.google.com/group/satchmo-users/
browse_thread/thread/655f4829acb85843/ed8e4ac287893b00) not possible.

Some members on #satchmo told me to report it to the list for rest of
Satchmo users and I'm curious to hear about the possibility for
Satchmo to use another system for pdf-generation?

Sincerely,
Gour

I'm definitely interested in hearing about alternatives to trml2pdf. I have heard of Pisa but haven't looked at it in detail to see how much better/worse it is.

It does have several dependencies so it will propagate the perception that Satchmo has too many dependencies. It's not necessarily a show stopper but is an issue.

Also, the license is GPL so we can't include it directly in Satchmo either. Having it as an add-on is ok though.

I guess my recommendation would be too look at it in more detail and see if it does meet your needs. The truth is, we might want to develop more of a pluggable architecture that allows people to use trml2pdf or Pisa or whatever other backend they may want to use. Since the pdf generation capability is not embedded in all parts of Satchmo, it should be pretty easy to make this a configurable option.

Good.

That would be sufficient.

That would be great and I'm looking forward to see it in Satchmo...

Thank you for your response.
