Looking for a recording/compression technology that can compress
recorded interviews down to a reasonable size ... MP3 simply doesn't do
the job. Any ideas?

Hi Brian,

Have you tried Ogg Vorbis (www.vorbis.com or google it to find more)?

It is the only true unencumbered open source codec that has no patent
baggage (unlike MP3).

.. oh, and it really does compress quite amazingly, but M$'s media players
do not support it yet - of course!

Michael

You will not achieve great results with either Ogg Vorbis or MP3 as
they're designed to compress music and not just voice, so there will
always be significant overhead if you're trying to compress just
speech.

You may want to have a look at Speex, which is developed by people who
created Ogg Vorbis, but specifically for voice compression:

Cheers,
Pavel
