First person to describe an unusual use of MIDI gets 2 free tickets to tomorrow's Maker Faire. :)

When I was a wee lad I designed a digital control system for a model
railroad that used the MIDI protocol. That pre-dated what we know today
as DCC by several years.

Now I just use if for boring things like automating pipe organs and such.

we used the roland DCB (Digital Control Bus) a pre-cursor to MIDI at
the museum of science and history to control lighting in some of the
exhibits and in the noble planetarium. it turns out that the DCB had
just enough intelligence to handle "light on / light off", used
inexpensive cabling, and had a thriving early digital musician hacker
scene. we were able to hack together a simple system for about half
the cost of a "professional" museum exhibit lighting control unit. it
couldn't do as much, but worked fine for what we needed.

Thanks Meadhbh! That's pretty badass. I've already given the tickets to John but I'll definitely ping you when we migrate our home lighting to midi. Looking forward to seeing what happens when I plug it into my keyboard and play chopsticks. :)
