I've been peripherally involved in SMAUG, the "Santa Cruz Microsoft-Alternatives User Group", for some years. The group has been meeting on Monday nights at the Pacific Ave. Pizza & Grille.

http://www.scruz.org/

In looking for other venues (various reasons to leave the current one), one suggestion I had was to ask about either NextSpace or similar (semi-)open meeting spaces downtown.

For those who are new to LUGs, traditionally they meet in one of two scenarios:

1. At a public place of business, usually one that serves food, hot drinks and/or beer.

2. In a loaned space such as an office conference room or a classroom.

Formal campus LUGs can sometimes get their own permanent location; I saw this at OSU recently, it was cool.

It seems to me that for a LUG to evolve from just an occasional social group to one that can focus on "LUG business", it really helps to get out of the restaurants and in to somewhere with no big distractions, where you can have speakers and spread out to geek.

At Cabrillo, we've used the Cisco networking lab for that LUG. The FeltonLUG uses a community meeting room in the Felton Fire Department.

Like most LUGs, SMAUG operates without a budget, so even a nominal rental fee is hard to generate and track.

Is this the kind of thing that NextSpace wants to support? How would we go about arranging it?

Often, one of the LUG members is an insider with the space-sponsoring organization. That is one reason I brought this here, there might be a NS'er who wants to shepherd SMAUG in.

While it would be great if one day someone revitalizes SlugLUG (though you think the CS department would care ...), and Cabrillo LUG is on/off/on/off, I am still very interested in a truly Santa Cruz Linux User Group. Are there others here with that interest?

thx - k'

Hey Karsten, I'd be happy to chat with you about this.  NextSpace hosts a couple of semi-regular MeetUp-style groups (Drupal users, iPhone devs).  Usually, the group is sponsored by an existing NextSpace member, which makes the logistics much easier.  Drop me a line off-list (jer...@nextspace.us) or just come on by and we can chat and see if this would work.

Cheers,
Jeremy

Makes sense, thanks. I'll see which NextSpace members speak up and
might be interested in sponsoring, and take it with you all from
there.

Cheers - k'

Hi Karsten,

Cruzio has a meeting room that can be made available for these types of events. Send me an email off the list and we can chat more.

If there are other groups that would like to make use of our room, let me know and we can work it out.

Thanks,

Mike Brogan
