Hiya Geeks!

Wanted to make sure everyone knew about another great TEDxSantaCruz
event that is happening tomorrow (Sunday, April 8th), once again
bringing the global TED community into our backyard as well as
exporting more of what Santa Cruz has to offer back out into the
world! Expanding on our partnerships with the MAH, Cabrillo, the
public library system and others, this event is hosted by our good
friends at Cruzio. We hope that you will find time in your busy
schedule to spend an afternoon learning more about how people in other
countries and right here in Santa Cruz are making a difference in the
lives of people around the world.

TEDxChange is a partnership between TEDx and the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation that is devoted to ideas worth spreading in the areas of
global health and development. TEDxSantaCruzChange will feature a
webcast of the TEDxChange presentations from Berlin (speakers Melinda
Gates, Jeff Chapin, Sven Giegold, Theo Sowa, and Baaba Maal) and live
speakers from Santa Cruz. Local speakers will be Carmel Jud, President
and Chief Executive Officer of Rising International, and Peter
Laugharn, Executive Director of Firelight Foundation. More information
and full program/speaker bios http://www.tedxsantacruz.org/engage/events/

It was great to see the geek press article Margaret posted about - we
have such a rich and deep history of local entrepreneurship and
leadership in the tech world right here in our own back yard and it's
wonderful to see the latest organizing profiled. But this history that
many of us have been part of stretches back much further than the
article was able to dig into. When I moved here in 1986 local
companies Plantronics and SCO were already strong presences and I
still vividly remember how so many of the UCSC geek geniuses had
already been making their migration to SCO to work on Xenix/Unix well
before Linux exploded and Apple adopted a Unix core into their OS
(Darwin). The geek scene that thrived here in Santa Cruz in the 80s
and 90s laid the groundwork for what is now such a core element of
daily life through social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter
and I've long ago lost track of how far and wide our local geeks
spread into all of the biggest and brightest tech companies around
Silicon Valley and beyond. In the mid 90s, "Geek Alley" downtown at
903 Pacific was the nexus with local ISPs ScruzNet and Cruzio, as well
as other startups like Webcom and my own companies IUMA and Addicted
To Noise and I see much of that same energy and excitement present
today at the NextSpace and Cruzio coworking spaces. Santa Cruz
still has so much to offer through our unique blend of technical and
artistic skills filtered through our own local flavor. Events like
the geek dinners & tech raising, and organizations like Cruzio,
NextSpace, TEDxSantaCruz and so many others, we will be able to
continue to continue to collectively innovate, creating new companies,
products, and social movements that will impact the world - all from
our little corner of paradise! :} For some amusing old press from the
90s, check out http://www.geek.org/press/95-08-30/ and http://www.geek.org/press/96-01/
and http://www.geek.org/press/96-12-29/SC_Sentinel.html

I also wanted to take a moment to pay tribute to one of our own who we
sadly lost a few weeks ago - John H DuBois, III (aka spcecdt), founder
of the free open access system deeptht.armory.com passed away on March
11th. He was a geek, family man, pyro, photographer, burner, armorer,
engineer, & builder - all of the highest caliber. He contributed so
much to the Santa Cruz geek scene and will be missed.

Jon,

Thanks so much for posting the TEDx information -- I see the videos are up here for folks who missed it: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL476F022361837586

I really enjoyed reading about earlier years the Santa Cruz geeks -- I've heard so much of the geek house era and reading those old archives gave me a richer sense of what it was like. It's interesting to see how the community connections happened over access to bandwidth + shared passions. I guess in some ways it's like how a water well and other infrastructure formed communities long ago. Can anyone say fiber???

Anyway, all things to ponder as we continue down this road of growing the tech ecosystem in Santa Cruz.

Cheers, Margaret

to Santa Cruz Geeks

Hi Jon,

So funny, I recently wrote a similar article in the Cruzio newsletter,
responding
to the Sentinel article, mentioning the early geeks and giving a
special callout to
John Dubois & the Armory. IUMA was an amazing thing. There were a lot
of local
kids (in our 20's) thinking big geekwise back in the 80's and 90's. A
lot of us
made careers of that crazy stuff.

I think SCO was a big factor. UCSC computer science students formed
geek houses and lots got jobs at SCO and were able to stay and ply
their mysterious crafts locally. We miss the tech engine that SCO used
to be.

Also I think there was less of a profit motive. The Armory was free.
A lot
of what was done was just for the joy of doing it -- how different and
new
everything was. On the other hand, a lot of us had SCO paychecks and
weren't as worried about rent.

(Chris and I were not UCSC geeks but came in from San Francisco. We
were married and started with the kid-having in the early 90's so we
weren't much on the geek-cult social scene. But Cruzio came out of
that
era and that culture.)

There are so many skills and connections stretching back... It makes
me
wonder how many people are still involved locally?

To those who helped set the stage in the 70's, 80's and 90's, thank you.

We are still in the beginning stages of what I know will be looked at with awe from around the world in just a few short years.  I envision a throwback to the original open culture married with the economic realities of today.  This vision in fact as one of the core principles behind my firm today and in how we collaborate with partners within our ecosystem.

I look forward to seeing an even more vibrant community of technical DOERS and am proud to be among so many brilliant geeks and entrepreneurs out making positive things happen in this world.

Sean
