Greetings Geeks,

It's that time of year where we get to dress up and love it up in this beautiful town we are lucky to call home -- it's time for the Santa Cruz Nexties. This year one of the winners comes from our own little community of geeks -- Nina Simon! (go Nina!) Read on below for details on all the winners.

The Santa Cruz Next group has extended a discount code for us that will give you 10% off the ticket price -- SCGEEKS (good until May 7th). Look forward to seeing you there!

Cheers, Margaret

On May 11, 2013, please join Santa Cruz NEXT in honoring four Santa Cruzans who are making a huge impact on our quality of life. We’ll toast them over over appetizers and drinks prepared by the talented chefs and mixologists at the new Hotel Paradox. The party starts at 7pm.

Each year, we sift through dozens of nominations to find four honorees whose work is bringing positive change to Santa Cruz, whether its through developing new programs to help at risk youth, opening up a museum to a new generation of learners or innovating on behalf of Plantronics. In a year where all of us have been challenged by events in Santa Cruz, this is an opportunity to come together and celebrate what makes our town unique, and why we call it home.

Come decked out in your finest and celebrate all that Santa Cruz has to offer.

Intriguing visuals will be provided by Timerie Gordon of Nielsen Architects and Design Studio, with graphic design by Ted Holladay of Studio Holladay. Design By Cosmic will inspire us with videos featuring the honorees. And DJ Chris23 is sure to get your body moving.

Each year the NEXTies take hundreds of folks to plan and stage, if you'd like to help out the night of the show, drop us a line at volu...@santacruznext.org

And the winners are…

We received 29 nominations and chose four whose work has national impact while being inspirational and unique. Most importantly, their work can catalyze greater action by our community to tackle issues and inequalities on the Central Coast. This group represents a wide variety of interests, from the arts to high tech, from agriculture to community organizing.

Darrin Caddes, Vice President of Design, Plantronics
Darrin Caddes spent more than 20 years designing products for some of the world’s most prestigious automotive and motorcycle brands, including BMW, Fiat and Indian Motorcycle.  As vice president of Corporate Design, Caddes has assembled a world-class team of industrial design (ID) professionals from leading design companies, such as Herman Miller, Motorola, Nike, and Nokia. That team works to ensure that Plantronics products effectively marry the intricacies of superior sound technology, for which the company has been known for more than 40 years, with the intimacy of personal fashion and comfort – and do so in a very small and elegant package.

Megan Joseph, Director of Community Organizing, United Way of Santa Cruz County
The Director of Community Organizing for the United Way, Megan works with local youth groups, such as Jovenes Sanos on supporting healthy lifestyles, bike and pedestrian safety and awareness, and youth violence prevention.  She has also been active in helping develop restorative justice programs for nonviolent offenders, which in turn will provide opportunities for offenders to pay restitution for their crimes while reducing jail crowding and recidivism. Throughout all aspects of her work, Megan embraces and encourages community engagement in order to foster positive social change and make Santa Cruz County a better place to live.

Rogelio Ponce, Owner of Cal-Pacific Berries, LLC.
Rogelio was born and raised in Watsonville. He is the founder of Watsonville Snow Day which brings snow to Watsonville for thousands of local residents to enjoy. Rogelio cares about bringing opportunities to Watsonville he does so by volunteering, sitting on boards, and donating what he can.  Rogelio is a former CASA board member who worked to increase the diversity of advocates and board members. Rogelio is committed to South County who cares about the community of Watsonville and, in particular, creating a healthy youth. He is a quiet leader who often goes unrecognized for the many things he does. It is time to honor a man that takes the time to help so many of our youth and families in Watsonville.

Nina Simon, Executive Director, Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History
Nina’s visionary thinking has revitalized the museum and transformed it into a dynamic environment bustling with people who are tapping into their own creativity. Throughout the world, Nina’s participatory approach is generating buzz.  She has given talks to museum and arts professionals in Europe, Asia, and North America about the MAH’s transformation through community engagement. Museums and arts non-profit organizations are all facing the same challenge: How to remain relevant, vibrant organizations that attract multi-generational interest and  Nina’s innovative approach has cracked that code.
