Was there a Geek Era?

Here's what Tech Republic has to say:

What do you say?

I think there's just a lot more geeks now.

Before IT departments there was a mainframe, with even fewer people involved, and an even greater sense of magic conjuring and bewilderment at the punched cards these people carried. Before mainframes there was the magic people who worked at NASA and HP etc. Before that, geeks were…. playwrights and astronomers?

I think a better question is, what's a geek in a post geek world where we're all geeks?

Graeme.

Mostly it's self identification as part of a tribe, in my opinion.

Why do we self-identify in this way? Because we don't just use the technology, we are very deeply involved in creating it, and it gives us a unique perspective on living in a world where technology is ubiquitous.

So, you could pick apart "deeply involved" but you don't have to, because what matters is the unique perspective it creates. That's a thing unto itself, and we call it "geek".

Like any tribe of self-identification, it's much easier to see it from the inside.

I thought the Tech Republic article was pretty awful, or rather it had an awful title, but nobody wants to read about the end of IT. That's really old news. Say "end of geek era" and you get a bunch of clicks from people who currently self-identify as geeks. Say "end of IT" and you get... crickets.

I never thought of myself as a geek growing up and as an adult. Then, late in life I discovered that I was a geek all along. I think Graeme is right. I think humanity is getting geekier. I think the alpha male looks more like Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg than Mitt Romney. I think Geek values are taking root deep into social and economic structures. I hope so. My geeks friends have always mostly been exemplary human beings.

i had a friend / mentor in college who said "the totems of the modern
era are: the electric guitar, the computer and the AR-15." not
surprisingly, computers, guns and music are things people frequently
geek out on.
