Hello Everyone,

I am forwarding the message below because it says much better than I can how I feel about the passage of the health care reform bill by the Senate.

It is a big step forward, and for that I am grateful. We are now in a better position to advance our goals while providing coverage for the neediest among us. This is not the time to quit. I have great hope that many improvements will be made before the bill is signed by the President. Let's put our final efforts to get the best health care reform we can.  And let's take a moment to celebrate our victory, even if you feel it is a small one.

Also, the Department of Labor has announced a 6 months extension for the COBRA subsidies. This will permit many of the unemployed to continue their medical coverage.

It is great to have a President who cares about the needs of people. And compromising is a big part of his efforts. Remember the old saying about the mighty oak and the willow?

Merry Christmas!

Maria

Families USA: The Voice for Health Care Consumers

Dear Maria,

At 7:15 AM EST on Christmas Eve, the United States Senate approved the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act! 60 Senators voted in favor of passage.

Take a moment and reflect. This is a first-a milestone never before reached in the history of the health reform movement-and it has brought us one step closer to bettering the lives of millions of American families.

Getting here has been a long and arduous journey-one marked by a series of highs and lows. Although the battle is not yet over, passage of the Senate bill means we have cleared the highest hurdle. Victory for the uninsured and underinsured is now within reach.

Click here to find out how your Senator voted. Please call 1-800-828-0498 and thank the Senators who voted for the bill for bringing us closer to affordable, quality health care for all Americans.

This day would never have come without your tireless work for affordable, high-quality health care for all. When asked to call, you called. When asked to write, you wrote. And when asked to speak out, you spoke out-loud and clear.

Nearly a year ago, we witnessed another historic moment as America swore in its first African-American President, Barack Obama. In his inaugural speech, on that cold January day, President Obama said something that still rings true today:

"[I]n this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words; with hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come; let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations."

So let us go forth and deliver the great gift of health reform. The time has come.

Thank you,

Jessica Larochelle
Field Director
