Friends,
In the following text from the Sanskrit ‘Merchant of Venice’, what precisely would be the meaning of कश्चिद्भ्यः?
अस्ति सकलाशाविश्रुता वसुन्धरालङ्कारभूता विनिशा नाम नगरी। आसीत्तत्र शैलेशनामा कश्चिद्भ्यो वार्धुषिकः।
Thanks.

कः is derived from the नकारान्तः पुँल्लिङ्गः 'किं' शब्दः meaning 'who'. Indefinite pronouns are formed by the addition of 'चित्' , 'चन' or 'अपि' to the various cases of this word in all the genders (e.g. कश्चित्) The words thus formed are अव्ययम् s which cannot have vibhakthi forms.
My contention is that the word कश्चिद्भ्यः is a misnomer.
I am subject to correction.

Please read मकारान्तः instead of नकारान्तः in my post above.

The text as printed is different. As you can see here,
https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.485825/page/n65/mode/2up
instead of कश्चिद्भ्यः, which indeed would not make sense at all,
what is printed is
कश्चिदिभ्यो , i.e. two words, the second of which is the 1st case
masculine singular form of the adjective इभ्य, in the sense of "rich".

In my message just now instead of
"instead of कश्चिद्भ्यः"
read:
"instead of कश्चिद्भ्यः or कश्चिद्भ्यो".

Thank you very much Harunaga Isaacson.
Indeed it is कश्चिदिभ्यः [वार्धुषिकः] a certain wealthy [banker], which I misread.
A thousand apologies to all who responded.
Regards
