Dear all,

This is a verse from Bhaminivilasah of Jagannathapandita.

तिमिरशारदचन्दिरचन्द्रिकाकमलविद्रुमचम्पककोरकाः ।

यदि मिलन्ति कदापि तदाननं खलु तदा कलया तुलयामहे ॥२-१२८ ॥

I am unable to find out how “तुलयामहे has been used by Pandita. Has he used it in place of “तोलयामहे to meet the metric constraints? Are there any other versions of the verse?

Regards

Murthy

It is not from the चुरादिगण तुल् but a नामधातु from तुला of the type तत्करोति तदाचष्टे. तुलां करोति तुलयति/तुलयते

तुलयते तुलयेते तुलयन्ते
तुलयसे तुलयेथे तुलयध्वे
तुलये तुलयावहे तुलयामहे

तुलयितुम् is used at many places by Kalidasa in Meghadutam.

Refer प्रातिपदिकाद्धात्वर्थे बहुलमिष्ठवच्च.

I will give the complete Prakriya later.

The verbal form can be used in the sense For meaning, under the गणसूत्र, there are some more suggestions - तेनातिक्रामति,  कर्तृकरणे धात्वर्थे, अश्वेनातिक्रामति अश्वयति, असिना छिनत्ति - असयति, वीणया गायति - उपवीणयति etc, make the नामधातुवृत्ति - like

तुलामारोपयति - द्वितीयान्तात्, or तुलया समीकरोति, would give the meaning to compare.

The difference between चुर् + णिच् , or तुल् + णिच् - तोलयति, तोलति (considering including आधृषीय ) विकल्पितणिच् is that in चुरादि (if considered included in चुरादि) लघूपधगुण (पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च ७।३।८६.) does not operate, in the  नामधातु verb, derived from तुला - balance (substantive noun).to compare (literal usage). In तुला, the "आ" is lost, due to the operation of लोप, as per".टेः॥ ६।४।१५५)" as णिच् is considered इष्ठवत्.  The rest of प्रक्रिया is like the others, in the चुरादिणिच्. taking आत्मनेपद suffixes.

The verb is not found in the चुरादि गण in माधवीयधातुवृत्ति, but some Hindi dictionaries give as चुरादि. Some of the other धातुपाठ-s may include such a verb also.
