Sanskrit equivalent of "generation"

Namaste,

Is there any Sanskrit equivalent for "generation" (as in next generation or last generation). The Hindi word for this is पीढी.

वंशोऽन्ववायः  or सन्ततिः 

would convey the same meaning while गोत्र has got much wider connotations. परम्परा would also convey the same meaning.

Sir,

Thanks for your kind reply. I had searched in Apte's 'Students English Sanskrit dicctionary'. In addition to some of the equivalents given by you, he gives समकालीन पुरुषाः for 'current generation', and पूर्वे पुरुषाः for past generation. Could we say पूर्वान्वयः or पूर्वपरम्परा for past generation? Will it be accurate?

Accuracy depends on the need of the usage of the word and dictionaries give only approximately equivalents, in any language whether it be English or Sanskrit.

So it depends on the usage and need for the translation.

Kamalesh Pathakji,

"Generation" means persons belonging to a certain age group all over the world (of any caste, tribe, nationality, etc). The words "Vamshaja, gotraja, etc" cannot have this meaning.

Some of entries in Apte's Students Sanskrit English dictionary appear contrived or synthetic. I remember my father (a biochemist) was looking to translate the technical term "revitalization" some years ago. He looked up Apte and it said पुनर्नवीनीकरण or something similar. He finally settled for कायाकल्प, which is not an exact linguistic translation, but better represented the idea. Similarly समकालीनपुरुष looks artificial, while परम्परा (or युग if you mean today's age by today's generation) might fit better. A generation leap can then be aptly called युगान्तर.

Thank you for this suggestion.

समवर्तिन् is used in Hindi also, but with a slightly different meaning. In Hindi it means "contemporary". Thus we can have 3 words समवर्तिन्, पूर्ववर्तिन् and अनुवर्तिन् to mean a  person who is contemporary, predecessors and successors. Yet, it will not exactly give the connotation of "generation" in English.

Can the word "पुरुषान्तर" be used to denote 'generation'? I saw it in an old Malayalam book used as a measure of time like मन्वन्तर.
