[Sunder Hattangadi]

In a commentary on Lakshmidahra-kavi's Advaita Makaranda, the following appears:

 

puruShAparAdhamalinA dhiShaNA niravadyachakShurudayApi yathA |

na phalAya bhR^iShTaviShayA bhavati shrutisambhavApi tu tathAtmani dhIH ||

 

In another version the word bhR^iShTaviShayA   has a pAThabheda (variant)

bharchhuviShayA   and  bhartsuviShayA.

 

I would greatly appreciate any explanation of the above verse. Thank you.

I know about only two pATha-s :

भर्त्सुविषया and भर्च्छुविषया ।

A few days ago I posted meaning of this verse to someone. I'm forwarding it for all:

This is from सङ्क्षेपशारीरकम् of श्रीसर्वज्ञात्मा .

यथा ; निरवद्यचक्षुरुदया - अदुष्टकरणजन्यापि ; भर्च्छुविषया - पुरुषविशेषविषया ; धिषणा - बुद्धिः - ज्ञानं ; पुरुषापराधमलिना - 'मृतो भर्च्छुः तस्यायं प्रेत' - इत्यादिविपरीतनिश्चयादिप्रतिबद्धा  सती ; फलाय - आनन्दादिजनिका ; न ; भवति । तथा ; श्रुतिसम्भवा - महावाक्यजन्यापि - अदुष्टकरणजन्यापि ; आत्मनि - आत्मविषया ; धीः - ब्रह्मात्मैक्यधीः ; पुरुषापराधमलिना सती - 'न ब्रह्मास्ति न वाहं ब्रह्म' इत्याद्यसम्भावनया 'जीव एवाहं परिच्छिन्न' इत्यादिविपरीतभावनया वा प्रतिबद्धा ; फलाय - मोक्षप्रदा ; न ; भवति ।

भर्च्छु - राज्ञः कस्यचिन्मन्त्री आसीत्  । तस्य नाम भर्च्छुः । स राज्ञः प्रियः । इतरे मन्त्रिणस्तद्द्वेषात् तं देशान्तरं नीत्वा राज्ञे मृतो भर्च्छुः इत्यवदन् । कदाचित् पुनर्दृष्टेऽपि तस्मिन् भर्च्छौ प्रेतोयं तस्येति मत्त्वा राज्ञो भीतिरेव जाता ।
