Hi all,

I was reading the text मृच्छकटिकम् and came across the word काणेलीमातृ and came to know that it means a bastard. It means that one whose mother is a काणेली which probably means a prostitute or courtesan. But spokensanskrit.de or monier williams dictionary doesn't have काणेली as an entry. Can any one explain what is the origin of this word?

The above is the extract from the वाचस्पत्यकोश.

The text is from Act I.36/37 from the dialogue of विट. There is a corresponding word as कणेरा in Monier williams.Here is the word explained in Apte's Dictionary:

f.{ii-stem}

1.an unchaste or faithless woman;

2.an unmarried woman

Hope this will be helpful in understanding the meaning.
