today we want to perform a translation sprint to Indian languages for
the Sahana Disaster Management System.

A short introduction:

Sahana is a free, open source disaster management system providing web-
based applications for data management and activity coordination in
large-scale humanitarian operations after disasters. The original
language of the Sahana user interface is English, however, usually it
will be necessary to have all strings and markings shown in a local
language and script.

Sahana uses GNU/gettext utilities for the translation of the user
interface, i.e. it looks up the translated string at runtime from a
message catalogue - and what we want to do today is to translate as
much as possible of this message catalogue (represented by 8 PO files)
into several Indian/South Asian languages:

- Hindi (hi_IN)
- Bengali/India (bn_IN)
- Bengali/Bangladesh (bn_BD)
- Panjabi (pa_IN)
- Gujarati (gu_IN)

These languages represent together more than 900 millions of speakers.

The Sahana Translation Team provides an online facility for web-based
collaborative translation based on Pootle (PO-based Online Translation/
Localization Engine). The Sahana PootleServer can be accessed via
http://translate.sahana.lk or http://ots.nursix.org, a short
introduction on how to use the Pootle can be found at
http://wiki.sahana.lk/doku.php?id=translate:pootleguide.

Ajay Kumar will be your translation lead today, he will coordinate
work distribution and discussion.

Special procedures for the translation sprint:

Sahana demo installation:
A Sahana demo installation will be present on-site to check the
translations.

Offline contributions:
If you rather want to work offline, please download the latest PO
files from the PootleServer and send the translated files to
webm...@nursix.org.

Builds:
I will merge all PO files (where the translations from the Pootle will
have higher priority than those from offline works), update the Pootle
and compile the translation packages for Sahana (ca.) at the following
times (all IST/UTC+0530):

13:00 / 15:00 / 17:00 / 19:00 (and later again at 01:00 and 04:00)

Merging may take 5-10 minutes (depending on if any syntax errors in
the files have to be found and corrected), and the update of the
PootleServer may slow down or lock out access for 1 to 2 minutes (I
will notify you on IRC #sahana before merge/update). I would suggest
you to have a break while I'm updating the server to ensure that no
suggestions or translations get lost.

The most recent translation packages from the sprint will then be
available for download at http://pub.nursix.org/sahana/india - these
files (sahana.po and sahana.mo) may be installed to the demo instances
for immediate update.

IMPORTANT:

Please all you forget your STOP LOADING buttons of your webbrowser. If
you have submitted anything you did not want to send to the Pootle,
please do NOT stop/reload it on your browser, but let the Pootle
execute your request, wait patiently until it returns and then use the
Pootle interface to start again with your submission (if you stop
loading, your submission will be executed anyway, but your browser
will not show your new location and so your _next_ submission will
more than ever go wrong).

Don't worry if you do not see a "Submit" button on the Pootle editor
interface - just ask Ajay to assign you proper permission
('translate'). Furthermore, if you use the 'Suggest' button, the
suggestion you submitted will not be shown - but it is however not
lost, those people with 'Review' permission will see it when reviewing
the translation and then can decide wether to accept or to reject it.

If you find incorrect, misspelled, ambiguous _original_ messages and
don't know what they mean, please ask on the IRC (e.g. me, if
available at that moment) for clarification.

It is not necessary to translate the PO file header - the message
with the msgid "" looking like:

It will be overwritten with the lines above at merge time, so it is a
waste of time to fill it in. If you want your name to appear on the
Sahana translation credits list, just contact either Ajay Kumar or
send a short message to webm...@nursix.org (please specify your
Pootle username).
