The Sahanathon may be a good occasion to put together a manual for coders planning to join Sahana. Suppose we assume that the person coming in has a basic knowledge of Py and databases and has some familiarity with M-V-C (or maybe not).  How can they wade in rather than dive in?

Where do you see the gap?

I would point such people at the Book:
http://eden.sahanafoundation.org/wiki/Book

The Book could use some updates to cover the fact that we've moved
most models from models/ -> modules/eden
Volunteers to tackle that would be welcomed :)

What's the process for that? Directly editing in booki and then inform...whom?... to get it reviewed and published? There is more to be written, e.g. about menus, reports and the new syntax for the REST API (the latter is already done on the wiki, though).

Yes, if feeling confident :)

I think it can be this list for now.
I have an outstanding task to write up the Book Editor
responsibilities & processes.

menus also need updating in the Book, actually, true

Reports & REST API would be useful advanced chapters, butI'm less
worried if we have the Wiki for that...

Sure, but we already have a chapter for the REST syntax (dubbed "web services"), which needs updating. That's what I meant, not gong to write new ones.

Fran - Do you mean Chapter 15 of the book? There are other chapters that do refer to the code but only Chapter 15 seems to provide some idea of how the code is organized? This is okay for somethink like the GHC event where we want people to get a sense of a simple extension. But if someone is coming in want to spend a few days becoming familiar with the code then I would suggest providing more information. I recall Pat giving me and Leanna lots of good information last summer when we used Web2Py for another project. I will try to put some of those notes together before the Sahanathon if possible.
