Why do I keep getting the following message when attempting to log into the Sage Notebook (sagenb.org)?

Please enable cookies or delete all Sage cookies and localhost cookies in your browser and try again.

I deleted all of my cookies at the end of the day yesterday and just tried to log into (or is it login to?) the notebook this morning and got that message again.  Any help would be appreciated.

I've seen this on occasion too. I think it happens when I've logged
into two different notebook servers. I thought someone fixed the
problem, which had to do with the cookies including the server name or
something.

When I've had this problem, I think it was enough to delete all the
cookies and restart my browser, and maybe do a full refresh (press shift
and click the refresh button, or press alt and click the refresh button).

Thanks,

Jason

I vaguely recall overhearing Tim Dumol maybe say he had fixed this
during the last Sage Days...

I thought I remember hearing him say that he made it so that the cookies
included the port number, which might fix this problem, maybe?

The "cookies incident" happened to me 4--5 times today in my office
and once at home just now. I'm using Safari and running OS X 10.6 on
both computers. If I delete all cookies with "sage" in them, all
returns to normal, but it's kind of a pain. I haven't tried Jason's
"shift/alt+refresh."

Just for the record, this has happened to me quite a bit recently.

I use a lot of different sage servers, often running different
versions, so I don't usually report this kind of stuff since I think I
am something of an extreme case. But most of the servers I use are
now running 4.3.2 and I am pretty sure I have seen the cookie message
more than before.

I used to never run into this, but I've seen it several times
recently. On that note, is there any reason we can't just ignore/reset
stale cookies rather than forcing the user to delete them?

I'm getting this message probably close to half the times I try to log into sagenb.org.  It is not browser-specific.  On my Mac, running OS 10.5.8, it seems it happens in Safari, Firefox, Camino and Chrome.  I remove all cookies, set things to accept all cookies, etc. (haven't tried shift/alt+refresh---where's the "refresh" key on my keyboard?), but usually it's not until I try an erroneous login (a nonsense login name, no password at all) before I succeed getting in.

Here's the relevant ticket I was remembering:

http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/6353

It is definitely in sage-4.3.2 (since it is merged into sagenb-0.7.4).

Looking at that patch show that:

(1) it addresses a related issue,

(2) it might not solve the issue we're discussing, since it merely
includes the *port* in the cookie name -- some unique id for the
notebook (e.g., the URL or something else) is maybe also needed to fix
the problem we're discussing.

So somebody should look at ticket 6353, see if a small modification of
it would give a real fix, and make said modification. Alex Leone:
this would be a good project for you, if you're looking for something
to do on the notebook. I've opened a ticket:

http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/8249

I had my Calculus II students working on an Introduction to Sage lab
today. We didn't have access to a computer lab today, so a few of
them brought laptops. I had them working in groups and the first
thing they were supposed to do was create a sagenb account. One
student would create an account, then log out, then hand the laptop to
the next student in the group to create an account. There were
several headaches that followed. We got lots of "proxy" errors that I
had never encountered myself, quite a few "cookie incidents", and
timeout issues which were related to the wireless in the room. It
wasn't the best first introduction to Sage, but hopefully my
overwhelming excitement about Sage counteracted any frustration.

I improved sagenb.org so it could be used by more people effectively.
Now there are 25,000 accounts.
It's getting hammered pretty hard, especially during day hours. E.g.,
I just looked at the log of people

I will have to do further work and profiling to scale the notebook to
work robustly for even more users.
Note that the bottleneck at this point has nothing to do with the
hardware or network -- it's entirely a software/programming problem.
I'll work on this during the spring quarter (paid for by Univ of
Washington).

I should have added that there are some other testing notebook
servers, e.g., http://demo.sagenb.org that are barely used. If
sagenb.org is slow you can use those.

Can we use the demo server consistently? Or, should I only point students there when sagenb.org is getting pounded.

I didn't really understand what I was asking above. To use the demo
server we have to create an account on the demo server, right? Is
there a way to migrate files easily back and forth? Am I missing
something?

Yes.

Nope. It's completely separate. But it might be useful anyways...

Such as when asking people to make sample worksheets when one is
introducing Sage to a new group of people :)
