It seems that we cannot legally distribute freetype within Sage, since
it is GPLv2-compatible but not GPLv3-compatible:
http://www.freetype.org/license.html

We need GPLv3-compatible because some software is non GPLv2-compatible
(gcc, glpk, iconv, libgap, ppl, readline).

See http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/12447

The site you link to above says "The FreeType License (FTL) is...
compatible with the GNU Public License (GPL) version 3."

So, what's the problem?

Never mind, I somehow only read the second bullet point...

You also both confused sage-the-distribution with sage-the-software.

If freetype's license were a problem to distribute it with gpl-licensed
code, it wouldn't be in any distribution!

Free-type is dual-licensed under its own license and GPLv2+

http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/freetype/freetype2.git/tree/docs/GPLv2.TXT

Sages COPYING.txt seems to indicate that the GPL was the license chosen
already.
