Trying to cope with a change

Hi!

Currently, I try to resume work on a project that bitrotted for a
while---to the extent that some patch won't apply and I have absolutely
no idea where the failing hunks of the patch should go.

It is patching setup.py in SAGE_ROOT/devel/sage. My patch expects it to
look like this:
'sage.algebras',

Well I hope so but there might be another performance bottleneck that the
matroid code hits. Maybe one of the authors can tell us more about it?
PS - the extra c in Volcker makes your name sound ckooler :P

Hey,
I'm for accepting en masse since it is (mostly) self-contained, provided
the doc builds cleanly too. From a skim-through of the patch, it seems like
there is some documentation formatting I'd like to see changed (and some
things that might be misformatted). However we can fix this up over time

The site you link to above says "The FreeType License (FTL) is...
compatible with the GNU Public License (GPL) version 3."

So, what's the problem?

It seems that we cannot legally distribute freetype within Sage, since
it is GPLv2-compatible but not GPLv3-compatible:

We need GPLv3-compatible because some software is non GPLv2-compatible
(gcc, glpk, iconv, libgap, ppl, readline).

Institute of Technology ([link]). The project
in arithmetic and complex dynamics is just getting off the ground and it
would be great to have a few more experienced sage users/developers there

I think the following needs to be addressed:
* segmentation faults due to recent changes in Sage
* either replace the private reimplementation of matrices or give a good
reason for why it is necessary
Then it is imho ready for inclusion.

Sooooooooooo how do we do ? We check that the ticket is up to date,
does not break doctests, and we set it to "positive review" with as
reviewer "The Sage Team" ? :-P

Otherwise they may have to rebase their patch every second day.
