Due to some cancellations, I have four seats available for the Nilgiris Trek.

Here is the current plan about the trek,
Start journey on 24th Evening - SETC bus from koyembedu @ 5.45PM
Reach ooty by 25th morning and then travel/trek to Avalanche area
Stay in the forest house in the avalanche
On next day(26th) do a trek to reach western catchment area and then come back to Avalanche
On 27th start a trek to Upper bhavani and reach there and then come back to avalanche and take a bus back to Chennai.
We are trying to add mukruthi to the plan...if we get the permission we might get into mukruthi NP also...

Ok guys, good news! We get to go to the Nilgiris.

Finally they have agreed on sending us inside with lots of restriction.

Here is the final route - 

Start journey on 24th night
Reach ooty by 25th morning and then travel/trek to Avalanche area

On next day(26th) do a trek to reach western catchment area and then come back to Avalanche
On 27th start a trek to Upper bhavani and reach there and then come back to avalanche and take a bus back to Chennai

I know, there is not much of  adventure in this trek...but still this is the only way to get into these protected and extremely beautiful areas in the Nilgiris

I am trying to get the logistics arranged for this one.

FYI -

There seems to be a small roadblock in planned Nilgiris trek because of which the trek may either be re-scheduled to another date or the place may be changed.The roadblock is occurring because of the recent rains in those areas, due to which govt has put up a restriction on people who access those areas.

We are still talking with the officials to make this trek happen.

This is disappointing for sure, but lets keep our fingers crossed and hope that the darn forest officials do not spoil our plan. CTC has a reputation that is hard to ignore and hopefully the officials will come around ! :)

Will keep you guys posted on any improvements...

Nilgiris trek - Dec 25-27

SUMMARY
Objective - Conquer some of the highest peaks in Nilgiris area and also trek in the beautiful Mukruthi national Park via Western Catchment area
Terrain – lush green forest, mountain streams and steep uphill
Difficulty – Moderate. Participants should be in good physical condition
Duration – Thursday late evening till Monday early morning, 2 overnights in forest
Transportation - bus/train
Expense - around 2500Rs (transportation, food, ...) to paid in advance (difference will be settled later on)

PLANNED TREK ROUTE:
Ooty -> Parson's (day - 1) - Western catchment (Day - 2) - Mukurthi - TR Bazaar - ooty

AGENDA
Assemble Thursday 8:30pm at Koyambedu to catch a bus to Ooty
Take local bus to base camp
Around 9am, arrive at base camp, take breakfast and start the trek
start the Trek from Ooty and reach the parson valley and camp the night in Parson Valley
Next day start from there and reach western catchment.
Third day trek inside Mukruthi National Park and reach ooty via TR Bazzar.
Sunday night Take a return bus from ooty to Chennai. Reach Chennai by Monday morning.

MUST CARRY LUGGAGE:
All participants must carry following items

Good walking shoes, preferably boots
Carry 3 bottles (can be refilled along the trail)
Small/medium back-pack to carry water, food, camping gear
Lightweight raining jacket to protect from possible rains
LED torch to get around at night
Two extra sets of clothes
Sleeping mat and blanket or sleeping bag
Sun cap and cream
Camera and 1500Rs cash
Food will be taken care of by us
VERY IMPORTANT: travel lightweight as this is a long/steep trek

Getting the permission to trek in this area has been very difficult. One of our CTC guy chidambaram has been talking with the forest officials for more than a month to get this permission!!!!!
We were able to get the permission for only 20 people. So the participation in this Trek is very limited. Register soon!!!!!!!
