Nagala/44 - Western Entry, Dec 19-20, 2009

U HAVEN'T SEEN THE OTHER FACE OF ME !!!

Thats a favourite punch line in our movies. The Nagala forest, the home of Chennai Trekkers weekly adventures, has also an unseen and unknown OTHER FACE - the less frequented Western side with its deep valleys and dry streams forming gateway to the highest peaks and panoramic views of the entire mountain range and plateau beneath!

Stories of parched throats, dehydrated bodies and lost paths are abound in this group from past treks to rendezvous with this OTHER FACE.

NOW THIS WINTER, under the veil of cold weather and hopes aplenty of water after the rains, we set to explore the unexplored and conquer the unconquered peaks. The MISSION is to enter Nagala through a NEW WESTERN TRAIL (not the usual western entry, its an unexplored new deep valley !!); climb and camp at the 800m peak !!

ARE YOU ADVENTURE ENOUGH TO DISCOVER THE OTHER FACE OF NAGALA?

OBJECTIVE
Climb and camp at the 800m central Nagala peak entering via a new western trail and exit through the eastern side.

PHYSICAL FITNESS: This is going to be a DIFFICULT trek with steep climbs. So, participants need to be in extremely good physical condition.

SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS: Shortlisting and admission to this trek is at the sole discretion of the Organizers and will be chosen based on factors such as physical fitness, attitude and contribution/volunteering demonstrated during previous treks in CTC, the availability of transportation, the max. group size etc.

Already 20 trekkers have signed up to discover the unexplored Western valley of Nagala this weekend. We will be climbing over a big dam (see satellite image below), enter an deep, unknown valley and trek along a gradual incline following a yet undiscovered stream to the back of the central 800m peak in Nagala where we will set up our overnight camp.

As usual we are bound to discover new awesome waterfalls, breath taking rock formations and challenging obstacles to be overcome as a team. My mind still cannot forget the peaceful feeling at the N43 campsite while sleeping under the myriad of bright stars in the open sky. The sunrise view on Sunday morning from the 800m high peak will be mesmerizing. The central peak offers breath taking views on the central Nagala mountain range below. After tea and breakfast we will be descending along the less known Southeastern stream which offers many exciting water pools.

Don't miss this one! I have attached a KML file with the trail. Double-click to preview the trail in 3D in Google Earth.

29 experienced trekkers have been shortlisted (refer below) for this weekend trek. Anyone else wants to join the mission?

We are also running short of transportation. Anyone out there who can bring along a car or bike?

Find below our mission map - we will be starting from the Western (left) side along the green valley/stream to gradually ascent into  the Nagalapuram mountain range. Once we reach the top point of the stream (blue balloon) we climb right towards the 800m central peak of Nagala were we set up camp on Saturday night. After this we descend using one of the three possible paths - blue trail towards the picnic pool, bottom purple trail along another stream that exists East, middle purple trail that will exit at the usual Nagala Eastern stream to exit the mountains on Sunday evening. In case we get stuck on the first day along the green trail then we will use the orange trail to climb to the front/Southern 880m Nagala peak (N/37).

Get ready for an interesting and challenging mission along a totally new trail. As usual we are bound to discover interesting new rock formations and falls never seen before.

Nagala/44 was no doubt one of my best Nagala’s so far. We discovered the amazing beauty of a new valley at the Southwestern side. The length of the valley is comparable to our usual Eastern valley from dam to picnic pool (around 5km). The only interesting difference is that our regular valley is nearly flat while this new valley gradually climbs up from ground level till 700+m resulting in several vertical drops along the valley floor giving birth to amazing waterfalls (5m-10m-15m-20m) which typically flow inside beautiful, large water pools. The valley is also very narrow and cuts deep inside the surrounding mountains. Some of the pools are simply superb – 20m wide, 20m long, 5m deep, the water is so crystal clear that you can see the bottom of the pools 5m below the surface. Swimming under water in these clear pools is out of this world. Let me tell you that our well known picnic pool gets a mere 2-3 star rating compared to the 5 star pools we discovered this weekend. This place is close to heaven, a real trekkers paradise. CTC will soon return to this heaven....
