Hi Sabre Sailors,
Wow. What a great weekend: Perfect 10 knot breezes... sun
sunshine... great fleet racing.... mixed in with a bit of fun
interclub rivalry and socializing. This is what almost 40 sailors
experienced on Saturday at the annual Sabre Interclub Teams race
event at Mordialloc.
This year's event was as hotly contested as ever with strong teams
from Black Rock, Blairgowrie, Mordialloc and Williamstown. Rumor
has it that the Black Rock sailors have spent the last month
discussing team tactics over a beer in the bar after last year's
defeat. Blairgowrie, on the back of their win last year, again
showed up with a full strength team consisting of current and past
national champions. Mordialloc demonstrated their growing Sabre
strength with three strongly built teams. In the end Black Rock
rained supreme with Nick, Garry, Steve and Chris taking an
unassailable lead with a perfect score 1-2-3 in two out of the three
heats.
Racing was hot and there was no love lost between any of the teams
including a bit of inter-club 'biffo' amongst the Black Rock A and B
teams. The first heat saw Fiona McCulloch in BRYC-B pull of a great
tactical move to overtake Garry Maclennen (BRYC-A) on the last
beat. Similar jousting occurred all day between teams.
Full results at the bottom of the page. The stand out performers
including:
John Dick, BRYC, 8th - who lead around at least one top
mark and would have taken out an over 60 over 70 or over 80 prize
had there been one!
James Nolan, BRYC, 12th - a new Sabre sailor who put
together some great results in his first big Sabre race.
Colin White, MSC, 15th - showed sailing's like riding a
bike. Colin borrowed his brother's boat to see if he'd like to
return to the sport after a 15 year break. I think his good results
has answered that question. Welcome to the Sabre fleet Colin! Is
the new boat on order yet?
Richard and Jordan at Mordialloc have kindly put together a few
videos of the day:

(I don't like the full version as at 3:45 seconds it shows me
stuffing up the start of the last race (for me and others.
sorry!) and having to do a 720)
Annoyed that you missed all the fun? Don't worry. Just get ready
for the
Sabre States!

Reminders
The early entry fee for this year's Sabre Nationals closes soon.
Remember to get your entry in by the 27th to avoid the late fee.
The Go For Gold regatta is this weekend at BRYC and a strong fleet
of Sabres are expected.
Out Beyond the Layline
Each post I'll try to pull something interesting from around the
internet. I remember being very impressed a few years back by a
Kite Boarder jumping the Cerberus off Black Rock on one wild day
when club racing was canceled. This pales in significance to this
jump!

Hope to see you all on the water soon.
Cheers,
Chris
