I just finished reading Net Force, a new novel by Tom Clancy & Steve Pieczenik
(can't teach school because of snow, and can't ride for the same reason!).
It's conspiracy/action thriller set in the year 2010. One of the main
characters rides a recumbent trike. Here is a description (pp. 133-134):
"In good weather, he took his recumbent trike, a low-slung sixteen-gear
three-wheeler...
"The recumbent had set him back two weeks' pay, even used, but he enjoyed the
heck out of it. In the lowest gear, he could climb the steepest grade around
here, ... and in high gear at speeds pushing forty."

Wonder how the authors knew about recumbents?

On Thu, 14 Jan, Jeff Hunn <jjh...@ctlnet.com> quoted from the book, "Net
Force", a new novel by Tom Clancy & Steve Pieczenik:

It always strikes me as ironic that most people consider spending two weeks'
pay on a bicycle to be excessive, whereas they won't even blink at spending a
year's pay on a SUV.

I'm not a Tom Clancy reader, but some time ago I read that he lives in Cary,
NC, which is right near me.

If this is true, he did not learn about 'bents from seeing them. There are
only a handful of us around here.

That's all I know.

Clancy lived for a long time in the DC area, a recumbent center. He might
have seen the regular WHIRL ride on Saturdays.
