Derrick Wilby has seen and photographed an Isabelline Wheatear in Rio Savane in Mozambique on the 25th December. The report comes a couple of days late as the photos needed to first be confirmed. If my information is correct then this constitutes only the second ever confirmed record of this species for Southern Africa, with the first being from northern Botswana in December 1972. This is also the first photographic record for southern Africa.

At this stage we are still trying to determine if the bird is still in the area, and I am also hoping to obtain more precise directions which I can pass on to those who may be interested in trying to find this Mega rarity.

Photos to follow in tonight’s report.

Regards
