Hello everyone, I have a really cool announcement: 10bitworks was accepted as an official artist for San Antonio's Luminaria 2012!

What it Luminaria and when is it?
Luminaria is a one night only art festival located in downtown San Antonio (HemisFair Park). It's an event setup to showcase local art/artists, everything from paintings and photography to laser light shows, music, dance, literature, visual, media and theatre. It's a free event open to the general public, last year it drew an estimated 310,000 people. This year Luminaria is on Saturday March 10th and runs from ~5pm to 1am. For more details see: http://www.luminariasa.org/ and https://www.facebook.com/LuminariaSA

How we got here?
Last April David Alexander came up with the idea to do a special art project for Luminaria. A few of us kept talking about it and I decided that it was a great idea and do-able project. So I submitted an application (with lots and lots and lots of help from Meghan) to Luminaria. The application required a good bit of work and included a thorough description of the project and it's design, a budget, supporting artwork, a video and a few other things. It was submitted just before the application deadline on December 9th. The committees were to announce selections on January 6th but that got delayed until January 24th (I'm guessing there were a ton of very good applicants). On the 24th we found out that we were one of 80+ artists selected to participate this year. In addition to the announcement all of the artists were told to keep quiet until after the press release...

What's the project?
Well, we can't say too much publicly but I will say that our project was inspired by under water bioluminescent creatures and has hundreds of LEDs.

Who's actually working on it?
The team so far consists of myself, Mike Perez, Meghan Regis, Greg Bluntzer, Amy Middleton, Rob Vidal, David Alexander, and Chris Hardee.  We've been working very hard the past week getting parts ordered, code written and art finalized. We're definitely going to need some more help with a few things and will make requests via the mailing list.

Where are the #*&@^%! juicy technical details and pictures?
Since we have a very very short deadline and we can't do a big reveal until Luminiaria, I'm not sure how detailed our documentation will be until after the project. After we hope to publish source code, schematics, design and build details.

Thanks,
-Jeremy Z.

I'd like to add that Jeremy did a lot of work on figuring out technical design of the whole thing including power requirements, radio protocols, and hardware platform for a mobile package. Pat yourself on the back, dude. :)

If anyone is interested in helping out by working on the project itself or by being at the FREE Luminaria event Saturday March 10, please let us know ASAP. For the day of the event we'll need volunteers to participate in the "exhibit" itself and to hand out information and answer questions about the exhibit.

thanks!

I don't deserve any credit I haven't done any work on this, You, Megan, and others have done so much. But I'm happy to start, I'm sick right now but once you get parts in I'll gladly help with what I can.

Jeremy, Megan, and others have done everything, I've done nothing but I wish to redeem myself so you can count on my hands for assembly and my body for standing by the table on March 10.

Hello there!

New Guy here, Name is Aaron.

I stumbled upon a video of this project and became instantly interested.

I would like to get involved in some manner to learn as much as I can about the project.

I have several applications that I would love to test but only have a basic understanding of the process as I have seen it presented online.

I have work on that day at the moment, but if I can get off that day I would love to come take a look and offer some assistance where needed.

Anyone got any links to some of the more detailed aspects of the project?

I am still in my research phase here, and if I find the right people and information I will seriously get sucked into this. I am predisposed to go overboard sometimes!

Right now I am looking into RepRap 3D printing and this and another led art like project, among many, many other things.

Anything provided is much appreciated.

-Aaron

The project sounds like it's going to be awesome!  I'm a designer, so I don't know if I could be helpful with the limited description, but I'm happy to help.
I'm going to be bombing luminaria with my EL Wire costume of unapproved art :-)

Jeremy Z – Thanks for sharing info on the 10Bit Luminaria project this afternoon after Nick’s Arduino class.

Nick – Thanks again for the considerable effort involved putting together the class, kits, and securing a sponsor!

10Bit – Thanks for hosting!

Jeremy Z – What hardware are you using to interface the JeeNodes to the LED light strings? Is it an existing available JeeNode “Plug” or something homebrew? Won’t say any more here so as to not let the cat out of the bag; just curious about the jeenode<->LED strip interface.

Tucked away in dark corners of the luminariasa.org website are biographies on all the artists. Here's ours.
