Well crossover isnt bad if you consider these
1. Not particular about certificates
2. Not entirely dependent on them for water (for 4-5hr + marathon runners)
3. just take back satisfaction of running and leave behind everything else

I think last yrs half marathon was pretty decent. Not very sure of marathon though

I would definitely suggest against doing the full marathon unless u finish before 5 hrs.... Although they say they'll support for 6 hrs, it does not happen

Half marathon should be ok though

Actually even for slow half marathoners like myself(!!) last year's midnight run was a nightmare in terms of availability of water.
So it is certainly a concern if one doesn't finish within 2-3 hrs regardless of the distance!!!!

I remember the first one in which a runner grabbed the entire box of glucose from the aid station and ran away. HAHA! and after that they were like, Sorry no more glucose, would u like water? luckily i was doing the Half. I pitied the guys who were doing the full. If ure sure u can handle the distance and if u have someone outside to support you, then take on the full. Otherwise (assuming that they are still the same and haven't learnt their lessons) pls dont go for the full. The Half is just as fun.
Cheers,
Shyam

A general question about night marathons. I guess most people train during the early morning hours, so running a marathon in the night would be a major shift in routine. Is there any increase in risk because of this? Is there any special training/preparation that will be required beyond the normal preparation for a marathon?

Hey everybody :-)
I will send this across to the Crossover guys as a feedback mail.
By the way, last year I assisted them. And was there till 5.30 am, assisting guys who were cramped and walking to finish the Full Marathon.
I believe that whatever you guys have experienced has to be voiced to them to see that the same does not happen again.
For those of you who are yet to make up your minds I have a suggestion. Without practice or adequate preparation, it is unwise to attempt even a half marathon. (Last year's midnight marathon there were about 250 entries on the eve of the race for the half marathon. Please plan your runs.)
Let us be careful and continue running like Fauja Singh.

Gul Mohamed

Well I feel the half-marathon is doable. I would be skeptical about
the FM -- you will have to arrange for your own support.

Last year it was an out and back route. They blocked one side of the
road and the other side was for vehicles. But after 4 hours, I think
they opened up traffic on the track set out for runners as well (there
won't be too much traffic at 4, but you still need to careful
especially if you run with music).

The water-stops weren't too well spaced out -- I remember encountering
a water-stop just after 400 m from the previous one. But I didn't
encounter any lack of water.

The certificates were a different story all together. For some they
blew up the time, for others they decreased it (my certificate said
that I finished the HM in 1hr 06 mins), while others got a DNF (did
not finish) on their certificate.

All that aside, it was fun.

I agree with Rohit.
I have one last feedback. I saw a lot of misbehaviour from the Localites with the runners, specially the women. I would appreciate if they chose some other track instead of whitefield. As in the first Midnight marathon also I saw the cab drivers waiting outside the companies passing remarks on them, and this time it was the local boys....

I was surprised that running at midnight was not as easy as it sounds. Given that it was mid Jan it was chilly enough that it took a lot longer to warm up (actually never really warmed up) and I felt fatigue from just being off on the circadian cycle even though I was not feeling sleepy. I felt cramps throughout the run though never cramped to the extent of having to stop.

I am planning to run the half this year too in spite of it being a tamasha event.

Since I didn't find my feedback in this chain which looks like might make it to the CrossOver folks I thought I would put my experience down again.

I ran the half last year (actually it was in Jan this year!) and finished in 2:35+. I thought they had 2 intermediate water stops to begin with between the start line and the turn-around line(not counting the one pretty
close to the turn-around). But on my last lap back to the finish line I could find only one water stop (of course no Electral). The only time I saw any Electral was at the end of my first lap near the turnaround line.

This year I was planning on going for the full but I feel pretty discouraged after reading what other folks have posted esp. about encountering traffic after 4 am. And I can never last 42k without water anyway.

Like someone had written it was fun nevertheless because I think the moon was out too and it was a clear night.

Guys,
I have just spoken with the Director of Cross Over.
  • This time they will not have a timing problem as they are using the 'chip.'
  • Security is being tightened up, so locals causing nuisance will be taken care of.
  • They have also noted the complaint against inadequate supply of water and glucose.
  • Last year I myself blasted the cops who let traffic through. That too will be taken care of
  • The date of the Midnight Marathon, 12th December 2009 is final.
Wishing all the participants, the very best.
Gul Mohamed.

Hi Gul

Its great that you are helping improve the only road HM/FM event we currently have in Bangalore. Positioned as it is exactly between the Bangalore Ultra and the Mumbai marathon certainly the HM will attract a lot of RFL runners. Also this is a good opportunity for those FM runners  who may not want to do the ultra distances or may not want to travel to Mumbai. Can you also influence Crossover to ensure that the course is kept open(without traffic and with adequate aid station support) for 6 hours to accommodate the slower runners? This is the norm in most international marathons.

woooh "number of tickets" looks like I am going to see a movie....
I guess a marathon registration should have a little exclusivity... the page has the title "Book online tickets for Cinema, Sports Events, Concerts anywhere in India " hahahahahahaha.

and if you dont select the "number of tickets" it says "please select the number of seats" is this link for registration of the marathon or watching the people running a marathon ?

I am still in the Bangalore Ultra mode, wearing an Ultra T-shirt and limping in office, and then I see this link, cant help from laughing.....

Of course RFL is not the organizers, Cross Over organizes this.... they make you run whenever they are in a mood to run a marathon! or with the registration process this time, I am still not sure if this is a marathon or the screening of a marathon video.....
as pointed out earlier the first one was on 19th May 2007, second one never happened, it seems they find the December weather good for running in the whitefield area, so they are organizing it in December this year........

I somehow got in touch with the right people at crossover through a friend of mine and I sent them a big long feedback mail with pointers to the Bangalore Ultra on how a marathon should be conducted. They were responding to my mails earlier, but the last one (where I mentioned the Ultra and the specific needs of long distance runners, etc) perhaps turned them off and they never got back to me after that! :)

I am planning to do a half, as I have been given solemn assurances that the aid stations would be adequately stocked, the timings would be taken care of and it would not be as chaotic as it has been in the past.

And I agree with Shyam, no point registering now; I'll do it a day before the race lest it gets cancelled/postponed.

Another reason for me to participate in this is to see if I can qualifying for the Olympics! ;-)

Cheers, Manav

I recieved this mail today saying "Greetings! We appreciate your concern for the “Go Green” of Bangalore.  It would be great if you can share the enclosed brochure with your friends/ colleagues"n

I really don't understand how running at mid night convey message "go green"

you burn thousand liters of petrol to reach the venue as its 25 km(avg/aprox.) away from city center. no public transport available so everyone has to take or share their own vehicle,
midnight so no light , require electricity for everything from lighting toilet to grand music arena that they set up to torture and drain out everyone energy in the name of warm up exercise, ( I don't remember if i saw incandescent bulbs everywhere last time )
water is given in paper cups which is difficult to use while running and god knows who cleaned them last time. and again waste of paper there
they sent thousands of colorful certificate ( at least they said that, i never received it though ) and waste papers.
and also last year exp. was horrible when i asked for glucose doctor said this is the last packet and I need it for myself,

I don't understand in what way do they utilize the money collected from it towards making Bangalore green

people think they can sell anything in the name of green

and if any one is buying that green concept plz register online, don't waste paper for registration  :)

That is so totally counter-productive. Sports and outdoor activities in India are still at their infancy. Event organizer should be working together, not competing with each other.
There are days when I feel like ripping-off some of my co-workers' throat and I am sure they feel the same about me, but then we all learn to tolerate and work together for that illusion called progress.

Well, I registered online a few days ago...normal online payment
secure code & all that.....
The interesting part was the call I received the next day. The
gentleman on the other side sounded too thrilled and elated at the
fact that someone had registered (I thought). He was profusely
thankful. That's what got me wondering....if I remember correctly, the
conversation went:
Him: Sir have you registered for the midnight marathon?
Me: Yes
Him: Great sir Great
Me: Thanks
Him: So you want to run a half marathon
Me: Plan to
Him: Very good sir
Me: Thanks
Him: Did you run last year?
Me: Yes
Him: Excellent Sir
...well, I did not know what to say after that, bye bye thank you beep
Anyway, jokes apart...should be safe. .And yes it was pure tamasha..I
found the stage shows tasteless with jeering crowds...it was
definitely not meant for runners...it was a purely commercial &
completely unprofessional venture that probably many self-respecting
runners may not want to be associated with...hope they do a better job
at it this time...but well, run just for the heck of it and that's it
& that's why I enjoyed it last year.

Ok, so last time I gave them a 2 out of 5 for organization and
stuff...this time I give them a 4 out of 5...road was well lit, newly
paved, ample water stations...good to see that there was minimal
littering...having the support center inside Sigma tech park was a
good idea...it was definitely a cleaner more pleasant
experience...food was not bad either....only thing - hope next time
they can extend the lap length...at least 5K approx and not 4K...
anyone checked the timings?...when are they coming online?

also, saw that unfortunate accident of the bike rider...what happened
then? Is he OK? Anyone knows? that did leave a very bad
feeling...definitely because of the run, traffic on the other side
suffered....there should be temporary dividers on the other side
also...maybe that's why it is better to have runs outside the city
limits or in remote areas to cause minimal impact to rest of public /
traffic ....

Yes, I agree it was much better organized than last time. Good things:

1. Started on time.
2. Enough water stations.
3. Bottled water helped me as I didn't have to stop anywhere (of
course, this must have also caused a lot of litter)
4. Portable restrooms on the course.
5. Well lit and well tarred roads.

Negatives:

1. NO ELECTROLYTES -- come on guys, spare a thought for the people
running the FM. Don't know what they would have done if the RFL guys
(thanks!) didn't put up an aid station. This is a big deal. Please fix
this next time.

2. I did hear some runners complaining that their timing chips weren't
registering (beeping) on the mats. We will only know when the timings
come out.

Thank you for the appreciation.

We enjoyed being there and watching so many RFL in the Half and the Full marathon.

It looks like all you runners have become too fast for the camera, hence the blurry pictures. J

Hi,

The timing planet site says "Timing Result will be uploaded on 18/12/2009 " Hope they mean it. I am skeptical, given that the sensors stopped ran out of battery at the U-turn point after about 3hours or so, and given the delay. I would be happy to see anything...

I was also told there would be timing certificates (medals??) for the finishers.. the least one can expect for the 250 bucks that was charged for the timing chips...

Anyone hear anything??

-Manoj

The timings for HM and FM are now up but I cant find either my race no or chest no in the HM list. Something is fishy about these   timings. All HM chest nos start with 3xxx. Mine was 1227 and I think Chandra's was 1212.  Maybe 2000 got added to all chest nos! In which case my timing (3227) is 1:43:29 about 2 and a half minutes less than what my Garmin showed! Will need to check with CrossOver what's going on.

Bhasker

Seems like their timings are off by around 3 minutes. Their official timings reflects 3.09.57 whereas my stop-watch showed 3.13, and concur with the bib part ...

Hey Bhasker,
The RFID tag no. is the no. that the voluteers took down aganist your bib no. in the sheet they were filling up... as far as I remember, there is no co-relation to that and the bib no.

Mine was some 18, but that doesnt match my timing too.. :(

I feel cheated of the 250 bucks...
