Are you allowed to modify two vars?

I am doing it and it seems to result in weirdness.  Behaviour  
sensitive to condition position and/or it re-enters a rule that it  
should not after the vars are modified.

There should be nothing wrong with modifying two facts in the RHS of a
rule.  But the key word there is "should."  If you can provide me with
a running sample of your problem I'll be glad to take a look at it.
