I'm starting Chris Pine's Learn to Program. I've ran through the
install instructions in the book, discovred SciTE is not seperated.
Have that installed too. In the command line when confirming ruby is
installed i receive this error : 'ruby' is not recognized as an
internal or external command, operable program or batch file".

I'm on windows 7 and the command prompt appears as:
C:\Users\Jonathan as opposed to C:\Documents and Settings as the
example in the book shows.

Can any direction be provided?

Thanks,

I'm not sure what Chris Pine book contains as instructions, what
version of Ruby you downloaded or what.

I can only guess you downloaded an old version of the installer since
RubyInstaller (none of its versions) include SciTE.

Now, if you type in "ruby" in a fresh command prompt (by fresh I mean
open *after* you installed Ruby) and does not work, that means Ruby
was not added to the PATH.

That means you need to go back to the installer, execute it again, and
*read* the instruction on the installer screens, looking for the
option that "Add ruby to the PATH".

In the case of RubyInstaller, that is clearly indicated in the second
screen of the installer, after you accept the license and just below
the directory we recommend you install Ruby into.

Windows 7 moved folders around, it no longer have path with spaces for
the user folder, which is good. Screens like that should be taken as
examples unless stated that "This is *exactly* what you should see in
the output"

Without more details on what you downloaded, how and where you
installed it, there is nothing else we can do.

Once you provide more details we will be able to help you better.

PS: Sorry took so long to notice your message, Google Groups didn't
email us (admins) about it.

Thanks! I got it up and running and I'm through the first few
chapters.
