What is the best way to contribute patches and updates to this project? GitHub pull requests? Patches on the mailing list? I'd like to contribute features and fixes for both the server and client and just want to make review of the as simple as possible for whoever reviews and merges the changes.

Pull requests are best. Send a few and if they get accepted we'll just give you write access to the repo.
