Apress sent me some review copies of some of their recent ruby/rails
releases for Ruby Ireland. Who wants one?
In exchange for getting a free book they ask that you write a review
and post it to high-traffic website. Below is an excerpt from the
email:
<blockquote>
In exchange, we request that each book recipient or winner write a
thoughtful review and then post it to any or all of the following
locations:
* A heavily trafficked blog, group website, or "geek" site
* Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or Bookpool websites
* A print publication
Once the review is posted or published, you or the reviewer may
contact me to let me know.
</blockquote>
So the process is:
1. Get free book
2. Read book and write review
3. Post review to high traffic website e.g. amazon.co.uk
4. Send me a link to your review
5. Profit!!
The books are
Beginning Ruby, Cooper
http://www.amazon.com/Beginning-Ruby-Experts-Voice-Source/dp/1590597664/ref=pd_bowtega_1/026-6633182-0629224?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1179851559&sr=1-1
Rails Solutions, Williams
http://www.amazon.com/Rails-Solutions-Ruby-Made-Easy/dp/1590597524
I've heard this one recommended as being a bit more designer focused.
Someone was asking about it on the list a while ago.
Beginning Ruby on Rails E-commerce, Hellsten, Laine
http://www.amazon.com/Beginning-Ruby-Rails-E-Commerce-Professional/dp/1590597362/ref=sr_1_1/103-2975138-5453416?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1179851366&sr=1-1
Practical Ruby Gems, Berube
http://www.amazon.com/Practical-Ruby-Gems-David-Berube/dp/1590598113
If you are interested in reviewing any of these books let me know.
Cheers,
Aidan
P.S. Thanks to Apress for sending these out.

I forgot to mention, there's 2 copies of each book. So don't be shy,
let me know if you want one.
I blogged it on rubyireland.com (with pic): http://rubyireland.com/2007/5/23/free-apress-books
Fintan and Michael have 2 of them claimed already.
Mark - which book are you interested in?
Don't want to pigeonhole the books but from a quick scan through them:
Beginning ruby might be suitable for someone who can program in
another language and wants to learn ruby
Rails solutions might be suitable for complete beginners, maybe even
non programmers or designers who want to learn a bit about rails.
Practical Gems might be suitable for someone who already knows a bit
of ruby - its basically a set of recipes based on what is available in
various ruby libraries.

As before in IRC I would be interested in
"Beginning Ruby on Rails E-commerce, Hellsten, Laine "
or the Ruby gems book.
I can then put up the review to the rubyireland.com page if it is
wanted.
Bye the way:
Hi to everybody ;) I am the new one *G
Cu Marvin
Here's what I extracted from the replies. There were a couple of vague
replies so if I missed out on someone, or put you down for a book
you're not really interested in let me know. Some people mentioned a
couple of books or none so I just picked one - maybe you can try
swapping at the meetup if you want a different one.
Beginning Ruby, Cooper
Fintan Palmer
Mark Reardon
Rails Solutions, Williams
Quamir Hussain
Niall Larkin
Beginning Ruby on Rails E-commerce, Hellsten, Laine
Michael Connors
Marvin
Practical Ruby Gems, Berube
Dave Cahill
Bartosz Blimke
I'll try to make it to the next meetup on June 12th and bring the
books along or failing that, drop them off to someone in Dublin who
will be going to the meetup. If you absolutely can't make it to the
meetup let me know and I'll see about getting it to you some other
way.
Cheers,
Aidan

you know, if you have any contacts with apress, perhaps it would be a
good idea to tell them
that thye should put the ruby books in major bookstores in town, i
know there must be a 1000 reasons
why they are not there, but, i went to easons in dawson st to have a
look at the book that niall reviewed and
actually i was going to buy it if it was what i was looking for,
but... there was none, no book about ruby,
RoR, not even python...

This is just a gentle reminder to all who took one of the Apress books
for review at the june meetup. When you finish it and post your review
online don't forget to email me a link to your review. You might also
post a link in this thread so that others here can read your review.
