Apress sent me some review copies of some of their recent ruby/rails releases for Ruby Ireland. Who wants one?
In exchange for getting a free book they ask that you write a review and post it to high-traffic website. Below is an excerpt from the email:
<blockquote> In exchange, we request that each book recipient or winner write a thoughtful review and then post it to any or all of the following locations:
* A heavily trafficked blog, group website, or "geek" site * Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or Bookpool websites * A print publication
Once the review is posted or published, you or the reviewer may contact me to let me know. </blockquote>
So the process is: 1. Get free book 2. Read book and write review 3. Post review to high traffic website e.g. amazon.co.uk 4. Send me a link to your review 5. Profit!!

Fintan and Michael have 2 of them claimed already.
Mark - which book are you interested in?
Don't want to pigeonhole the books but from a quick scan through them: Beginning ruby might be suitable for someone who can program in another language and wants to learn ruby Rails solutions might be suitable for complete beginners, maybe even non programmers or designers who want to learn a bit about rails. Practical Gems might be suitable for someone who already knows a bit of ruby - its basically a set of recipes based on what is available in various ruby libraries.
Cheers,
AF

Hi Aidan, Sounds like Rails Solutions may have been written with someone like me in mind. I don't know why but the pink cover makes me think it'll be light and fast read. If its written for someone who just wants to put together a few apps in jig time, then I'd like to nominate myself to work my way through it.

Here's what I extracted from the replies. There were a couple of vague replies so if I missed out on someone, or put you down for a book you're not really interested in let me know. Some people mentioned a couple of books or none so I just picked one - maybe you can try swapping at the meetup if you want a different one.
Beginning Ruby, Cooper Fintan Palmer Mark Reardon
Rails Solutions, Williams Quamir Hussain Niall Larkin
Beginning Ruby on Rails E-commerce, Hellsten, Laine Michael Connors Marvin
Practical Ruby Gems, Berube Dave Cahill Bartosz Blimke
I'll try to make it to the next meetup on June 12th and bring the books along or failing that, drop them off to someone in Dublin who will be going to the meetup. If you absolutely can't make it to the meetup let me know and I'll see about getting it to you some other way.
Cheers,
Aidan

Yes, kudos to Aidan for bringing this to the group and thanks for letting me nab one of them.
Just a thought but maybe we should devote one of our future meet-ups to a bit of a book review - not just these ones but any of the other countless Ruby titles we've picked up on spec - and build up a kind of recommended reading list?
Cheers

I would be willing to review "Rails Solutions, Williams" if possible. I have "Beginning Ruby on Rails E-commerce, Hellsten, Laine" in my collection and I will review that also. It's ok, a few good sections. All there examples are developed on Ubuntu.

you know, if you have any contacts with apress, perhaps it would be a good idea to tell them that thye should put the ruby books in major bookstores in town, i know there must be a 1000 reasons why they are not there, but, i went to easons in dawson st to have a look at the book that niall reviewed and actually i was going to buy it if it was what i was looking for, but... there was none, no book about ruby, RoR, not even python... Borders out in Blanchardstown isn't too bad but I agree that if you're in Dublin, Hodges & Figgis on Dawson Street is the best bet for your Ruby book needs. Easons and Waterstones just don't seem to carry as much stock as they used to.

As it happens, I was up in Dublin on Tuesday afternoon and spent ~€100 in Hodges Figgis, including two O'Reilly RoR books: "Rails Cookbook" and "Ruby and Rails Up and Running". Definitely an improvement over the selection of books in Cork! Hodges Figgis is a required visit any time I'm up in Dublin, much like Foyles bookshop is whenever I'm in London.

This is just a gentle reminder to all who took one of the Apress books for review at the june meetup. When you finish it and post your review online don't forget to email me a link to your review. You might also post a link in this thread so that others here can read your review.

Sorry for the delay. Blame it on Rio ( partially ) after I got distracted and started to experiment with it after the talk at the last Ruby Tuesday. :-)
