I have been learning and applying permaculture in my life for the last few years, enjoying learning how to culture a relationship with the land and all living things on it, while observing and helping optimize the systems therein.
However, I and others have found it hard to obtain funding to pursue projects that are based in permaculture design principles, as the ethics of permaculture are not based in concentration of profit but in equitable distribution and regeneration.
Crowdfunding is a solution to this predicament, but existing sites such as Kickstarter do not cater to these sort of open-ended, 100 year time frame projects! In fact, the idea for the site came as a result of Christian, my friend and PDC teacher, being denied access to Kickstarter for a project related to his education center in Thailand, the Panya Project (panyaproject.org).
We support Open Source software development and want to use the Catarse platform (catarse.me) to build this site. To date, we have created full information architecture, a strong design direction, and most copy written. However, due to other work commitments, our friend is no longer able to develop the site, which is based on the Ruby on Rails platform.
The site will see 3 different phases of development. To summarize:
1. Basic Crowdfunding Functionality - Catarse platform to be taken as-is, skinned (new design and copy applied) and integrated with Paypal API. To be used as a proof of concept/momentum building for the next steps.
2. Permaculture Design Certification implementation - Thorough rebuild of site to reflect our improved AI and to include capabilities for PDC course listings (and therefore funding not just projects but permaculture education/certification as well).
3. Site tweaks and Advanced capabilities implementation - TBD, likely to be determined as a result of user experiences of phase 2 and cross-involvement with other sites/projects.
SO! We are seeking a Ruby developer who is willing to join us in bringing this project to the public, ideally someone who is interested in permaculture or regenerative agriculture and who supports Open Source software development. This person will be compensated for their contribution to the site development, and this payment can be configured in various ways, depending on the needs of all involved. We want to ensure that everyone is fairly compensation for their work.
Our project is called We The Trees, and the development environment with a recent fork of the Catarse codebase can be found at www.wethetrees.com.
