Anyone got a video camera?

Hi all,

On the day we want to film the talks so we can later edit them together with slides and publish them on the Ruby Manor website.  If you've looked at our costings spreadsheet (http://rubymanor.org/3/costs) you'll see that we've budgeted for hiring a camera.  However, at both previous Manor's we were lucky enough to borrow a camera from someone and we're hoping to do the same this year as it'll help us keep the costs down.

So, does anyone have a video camera and tripod that we can borrow that weekend to film the talks?

We don't have any requirements other than it being able to film for about 8hrs.  We'll provide the recordable media and we'll make sure it is safely handled throughout the day.  We will need to keep hold of it for a couple of days afterwards so we can get the footage off the media and onto a computer for editing.

In return we'll let you into the Manor for free and you'll gain our immense gratitude.

I've both a Canon XH-A1 or a Canon HV20 along with a tripod - if no-one in London has one you can borrow either.

I have a Sony HDR-CX105, am in London, but unfortunately not got a tripod.  Happy to provide that if it helps.

Thanks for offering these Andrew.  These look pretty much like what we've used in the past.  They record onto standard DV tapes, yeah?

One thing is that given you're not based in London, are you confidant you'd be able to make it to the venue at least for 9:30am to give us plenty of time to set it up etc?  If not, maybe you'd be happy to let us take ownership of the camera & tripod earlier in the week?  

We understand if you're not comfortable with these options by the way.  It's a lot to ask!

Thanks for offering this!  Looking at the tech-specs it appears this camera records onto internal memory (good for 3hrs it says) or onto memory sticks.  Do you have any idea how big a memory stick we'd need to record for the full 8hrs?

Or can it be plugged directly into a laptop and record straight onto a disk?  USB / Firewire?

Yes, standard DV tapes.

I can certainly be there well before 9.30am - I'm only in Coventry so not too far.

Hey Murray

I've just taken a quick look at the camera, and I have both an internal memory stick as well as the built in memory.  In long play format, the memory stick can do 6h42m, and in standard it does 4h57m.  The internal memory can do 3h18m in long play and 2h27m in standard play.  So if we recorded in standard, we'd have around 7h30 before we need to swap out media (although we'd need to remember to switch the media manually after 5 hours.

I think that would work.  We could of course just go safe and do long play as well.
