1) Iraq: 15 killed, 63 wounded
AntiWar.Com
"Bombs targeted Baghdad governmental institutions today, exactly a
week after 'Bloody Tuesday' left hundreds dead or wounded. Mosul was
equally affected, but those attacks were directed at Christian targets
instead. At least 15 Iraqis were killed and 63 more were wounded
across the country. The attacks also indirectly affected Camp Ashraf
as a number of journalists heading to the immigrant camp were awaiting
transport together near a blast site. Also, the ongoing PKK
difficulties claimed two more lives in Turkey." (12/15/09)

"The death toll from an explosion in the central Pakistani city of
Dera Ghazi Khan climbed to at least 25 on Wednesday, a senior
government official said. Another 56 people were wounded in Tuesday's
attack, according to Hassan Iqbal Khan." (12/16/09)

3) Immigration overhaul bill unveiled in US House
Los Angeles Times
"Raising the curtain on a new round of debate over immigration reform,
a group of Democratic congressional lawmakers introduced a
comprehensive bill Tuesday that, among other provisions, would offer a
path to legalization for the country's estimated 12 million illegal
immigrants. The bill, championed by Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez (D-Ill.),
was decidedly more pro-immigrant than the bipartisan legislation House
lawmakers debated two years ago. And the latest version drew immediate
fire from the left as well as the right. Groups opposed to
legalization derided it as a form of amnesty, and more-liberal
factions complained that it relied too heavily on
enforcement." (12/15/09)

legalize same-sex marriage in Washington D.C., with two council
members opposing. 'This legislation is an important and historic step
towards equal dignity, equal respect and equal rights for same-sex
couples here in our nation's capital, which also preserves the right

5) WA: Islamist convicted in shootings at Seattle Jewish center
Los Angeles Times
"A King County jury on Tuesday found Naveed Haq guilty of aggravated
first-degree murder in the 2006 shootings at the Jewish Federation of
Greater Seattle, a verdict that carries an automatic life
sentence. ... Haq opened fire in the center's offices, killing Pamela
Waechter, 58. Several of the shooting victims who were in the
courtroom hugged tearfully when the verdicts were announced. ...
Prosecutors had introduced as evidence recordings from 10 phone calls
Haq, 34, placed to his family after his arrest. In them, Haq told his

"Police officers must obtain a search warrant before scouring the
contents of a suspect's cell phone unless their safety is in danger, a
divided Ohio Supreme Court ruled Tuesday on an issue that appears
never to have reached another state high court or the U.S. Supreme
Court. The Ohio high court ruled 5-4 in favor of Antwaun Smith, who

Washington that the country's armed forces should be sent into the
North Waziristan area, a sanctuary for al-Qaida and Afghan insurgents,
analysts and officials said Tuesday. Due to resistance from the core
army, however, any operation there could be half-hearted. The Obama
administration is pressuring Pakistan to follow its offensive against
Pakistani Taliban in South Waziristan with a push against Afghan
insurgents and al-Qaida fighters based in North Waziristan, a

part of more than $604 million worth of vehicles and equipment that
the U.S. plans to give Mexico in the coming months. 'The helicopters

States is recalling hundreds of thousands of flu shots because they
aren't as potent as they should be. The French manufacturer Sanofi
Pasteur is voluntarily recalling about 800,000 doses of vaccine meant
for children between the ages of 6 months and 35 months. The company
and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasized that the

Democrats' landmark healthcare bill. The vote on the amendment --

commercial for healthful food. During that time, they would see 55
commercials for junk food. Those are among the findings of a new study
by a University of Arizona professor who examined TV programming aimed
at children 11 years old and younger. Professor Dale Kunkel's study,
commissioned by Children Now, a California-based advocacy group,
concluded that the food-and-beverage industry has failed to live up to

Christian Science Monitor
"As Yemen struggles to quell Houthi rebels in the north, a secession
movement gathering steam in the south threatens to deprive the central
government of badly needed resources. While outside analysts have
become increasingly concerned that the two conflicts are creating an
unstable state where Al Qaeda could more freely operate, the chief
domestic concern is more pressing: survival. 'The south has all the
resources and only one third of the population. We cannot allow them
to secede,' said a member of the opposition party Islah in the

"If Democrats manage to pull off efforts to reform the US healthcare
system and ensure coverage for millions who are currently without
insurance, the new system -- by design -- will likely still leave tens
of thousands to die without insurance before reforms kick in. A Raw
Story analysis, based on a recent Harvard Medical School study,
estimates that 135,000 American citizens and over 6,600 US veterans
will die due to a lack of health insurance before current proposed
healthcare reform measures would take effect. One hundred and thirty-
five thousand US lives far exceeds the total number of Americans who

on a cross, the child's father said Tuesday. Chester Johnson told WBZ-
TV that his son made the drawing on Dec. 2 after his second-grade
teacher asked children to sketch something that reminded them of the
holiday. Johnson said the teacher became upset when his son said he
drew himself on the cross. Johnson, who is black, told WBZ he suspects
racism is involved. He said he thinks the school overreacted and wants
an apology. ... The boy was cleared to return to school on Dec. 7

"This is just another example of what a hard time the old state and
corporate hierarchies are having adjusting to a networked world. We
see them constantly being blindsided by negative publicity. They're
still encultured to a world of unidirectional broadcast communications
with centralized, high-cost hubs, where a quiet phone call or lunch

"In 1941, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the ratification of
the Bill of Rights which were added to the U.S. Constitution on
December 15, 1791, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared December
15 to be Bill of Rights Day. It isn't really surprising that a
national holiday celebrating the first ten amendments to the
Constitution would be ignored by many people, most of whom aren't even
aware the holiday exists. A couple hundred years have weathered much
of the patriotic spirit to little more than flag waving in early July.
Even some of our Founding Fathers would probably be ok with not

32) Turning children into Orwellian eco-spies
Spiked
by Frank Furedi
"There is a long and sordid tradition of trying to socialise children
by scaring them. The aim of such socialisation-through-fear is
twofold: firstly, to get children to conform to the scaremongers'
values; secondly, to use children to influence, or at least to
contain, their parents' behaviour. When I was a schoolchild in
Stalinist Hungary, we were frequently warned about the numerous
threats facing our glorious regime. I also recall that we were
encouraged to lecture our errant parents about the new wonderful
values being promoted by our brave, wise leaders. The Big Brothers of
the 1940s saw children as tools of moral blackmail and social control.
Today, in the twenty-first century, scaremongers see children in much
the same way, exploiting their natural concern with the wonders of
life to promote a message of shrill climate alarmism." (12/15/09)

36) Corporate greed & disaster? Pages from a crime novel
Boston Globe

"Decades later, the gig with the economy would end badly for the
erstwhile saxophone player. But in the 1950s, jazz musician Alan
Greenspan was just another cat under the spell of a dame, bewitched,
bothered, and bewildered, in thrall to the novelist Ayn Rand and her
torch song of laissez-faire business, free markets, and capitalist
elitism. If only the Fed chairman-in-training had swung to a different

37) Obama's "ben tre logic"

by Joel Bleifuss
"Has nothing changed since we were preparing to invade Iraq eight
years ago? Yes, we have a new president, one who is smart and speaks
in complete sentences. Yet we are about to jump pell-mell into
escalating another war. With the surge of 30,000 American soldiers set
to begin in January, President Barack Obama's total Afghan War
escalation now stands at 51,000. And what for? Why pour more troops
into Afghanistan, the graveyard of empires? To defeat al Qaeda -- in
Pakistan? To protect and nurture an Afghan government with little
local legitimacy? To protect an Afghan population from foreign

38) Why not "cash for US jobs?"

"The last time I made a trip to Home Depot was for a space heater for
my bedroom, and I did what I suspect many people are doing on
purchases like this: In addition to comparing the price tags, looking
for the 'Energy Star' label and asking whether this heater is any
better than the one that's now on its way to its eternal home, I
looked to see if any of the products had the 'Made in the U.S.A.'
label. Unfortunately, none did, and I can't say I was surprised. And
there lies a major flaw in President Obama's trip to a Home Depot in a
Washington suburb today to tout his 'cash for caulkers' program. It is
a well-intentioned program to get people to invest in making their
homes more energy efficient, and in the process getting more dollars

39) Deal or die on healthcare
The American Prospect
by Paul Starr
"The moment of decision on healthcare reform is arriving for
progressives in Congress. Some of them have insisted they will refuse
to vote for any bill without a public option, and that is now the only
bill that has any chance of passing. If they hold to their position,
the most significant social reform on behalf of low-income Americans
in 40 years will go down to defeat. It should hardly be surprising
that we have come to this point. The requirement for 60 votes in the
Senate to pass ordinary legislation was always going to empower the
most conservative members of the Democratic caucus or the few moderate
Republicans who might support a bill." [editor's note: - SAT]

every community in the United States has a park, bridge, or school

"The U.S. House has voted for legislation that is described as
'financial services reform.' But most of the 'reforms' are so mild
that the savviest of the nation's big bankers will be breathing sighs
of relief, rather than worrying about being regulated into good
behavior. That's not to say that the House bill is meaningless. It
proposes some valuable shifts, including the creation of a Consumer
Financial Protection Agency that could -- if infused with proper
authority and backed by a White House and Congress that want to tip
the regulatory balance in favor of the great mass of Americans -- give
bankers and speculators some headaches. Unfortunately, that's a vague

no drug warrior. However, he seems unlikely to challenge the
disastrous new prohibition. The president has, however, ended the
federal campaign against medical marijuana, ordering administration
officials to respect state laws legalizing the drug for medicinal
purposes. This policy will grow increasingly important as more states
allow use of med-pot (for instance, in November Maine voters legalized
medical marijuana dispensaries). Congress should approve legislation

54) How I learned to stop worrying and love the Borg
TCS Daily
by Jon N. Hall
"There are two ways we use 'left' and 'right' in politics. The first
and older usage is simply to denote two opposing camps. In America we
have two major parties, so this usage works nicely. The 'opposing
camps' usage dovetails with the red-state/blue-state, us-versus-them
line of thinking, but it doesn't account for everyone. Some party
members go 'off the reservation' on some issues. We might find a
Democrat who is pro-life, or a Republican who wants to raise taxes.
Such anomalies upset the applecart. The second usage of 'left' and
'right' is a bit more sophisticated, and tries to account for these
anomalies by recognizing that people don't usually fit neatly into
just two camps." (12/15/09)

55) Belgium waffles
The Weekly Standard
by Christopher Caldwell
"Ever since it was carved by treaty out of the Dutch, French, and
German borderlands after the Napoleonic wars, Belgium has been an odd
kind of country -- short on space, sunlight, and national identity. It
was a shotgun marriage of two peoples, the Dutch-speaking Flemings in
Flanders and the French-speaking Walloons in Wallonia, who, apart from
a shared Catholicism had almost nothing in common. Since Brussels, the
Belgian capital, is also the seat of government for the 27-nation
European Union, Belgium has become a symbol of the unity-in-diversity
that EU bureaucrats aspire to. But the marriage of Flanders and
Wallonia, never a love match, has in recent decades entered a thrown-
crockery phase. It has become a burning question whether the country
is headed for an outright divorce, of the sort that broke
Czechoslovakia into two countries after the Cold War. The question has
largely been answered." (for publication 12/21/09)

"There's been a good deal of speculation as to why the Obama

Bush-era torture policies. In its pleadings, the Justice Department
continues to take the position that courts shouldn't usurp executive
authority over national defense. But the practical effect of this
effort will be to ratify such policies and the legal architecture that
supports them. As Scott Horton explains, 'the path to a renewal of the
criminal misconduct of the Bush years is being prepared right now. And
Obama Justice Department lawyers are doing the work.' Christopher
Anders, ACLU senior legislative counsel, also noted in last week's
conference call that because the statute of limitations for
prosecuting torture is eight years, those pushing for accountability
will begin to bump up against the statu[t]e for acts committed in 2002
as soon as this spring. There's one other practical result of
foreclosing every possible effort to litigate the legality of torture:
The Khalid Sheikh Mohammed trial in New York will now become the only

58) A few more words on animal "rights"
A Passion for Liberty
by Tibor R. Machan
"There have always been eager critics of individual human rights, for
a variety of reasons, mainly because taking them seriously implies a
severe reduction of the scope of governmental authority and power.
That does not sit well with many people who want to achieve various
goals without having to concern themselves about gaining the consent
of those whose lives and labors they wish to use to help them do this.
They wish to conscript people, not gain their consent, when they want
their support and acknowledging individual rights renders this very
difficult. There are however those, too, who want to expand the
coverage of individual human rights to include at least the 'higher'
animals, so that recently, for example, the government of Spain
decided to 'grant' rights to great apes. There is now a sizable
movement, both popular and academic, insisting that animals other than
human beings have the very same rights the American Founders mentioned
in the Declaration of Independence." (12/15/09)

like the immortal Harry Houdini -- who bind and chain themselves in
handcuffs, shackles, locks, and chains, sometimes with time pressures
like drowning or suffocation to limit the amount of time they have to
escape. I suppose to be fair we'll now have to add stage magic,
itself, to the list of escapist entertainment since the audience knows
the magician is somehow tricking them and are caught up in the
suspense regardless. The key to any sort of escapism is the audience
member's 'willing suspension of disbelief.' All consumption of
narrative entertainment -- and that does include games, jokes, and

abortion: Herschensohn was pro-life, Campbell pro-choice (Republicans
nominated pro-choice John Seymour for the other seat). When
Herschensohn went down to defeat at the hands of liberal Democrat
Barbara Boxer, it was supposed to be a wake-up call for Republicans.
The argument usually ran thus: The California GOP's conservative

candidates for public office." (12/15/09)

Affordable tennis shoes are ones that have a lower price tag. So how
