Greetings,

I hope everyone is doing well. We are now about halfway through the month of March. This means you still have time to join this month's carnival Epic Moments in GMing, http://www.koboldenterprise.com/march-rpg-blog-carnival-epic-moments-of-gming/ .

It also means that we need to see if someone is available to run Aprils RPG Blog Carnival. Please let us know if you are interested.

How about this, in the Spirit of April...

GMing for a Ship of Fools

People love when player characters do great heroic deeds and win fame and fortune in a campaign.  But how about when things horribly wrong go... and it's all the fault of some fool hardy decision by some Player Character?  Those can either be tragic-fun, or Fun-Fun, or even just plain old un-fun, depending on the circumstances.

What is the most memorable experience have you had GMing for you Ship of Fools?

:)

I take it you would be willing to host in April?

Sure thing.  If you like that idea.  Of course with spelling corrections this time.

That sounds good, I'll put you down for April. What is your Blog URL (as a place holder)?

Hi Jeff,

Not sure if I flubbed this up or not, but we haven't gotten any nibbles for the Carnival so far... any ideas?  Did I not do something correctly?

Sincerely,
Mark

Involvement in the carnival requires three things: awareness that it is happening, a topic choice, and inspiration for an article on the subject. You've done the first two properly, and the third is out of your hands. I took a stab at it but found that I had already used all my relevant material in a blog carnival article a few years back on "my biggest mistakes"; others may have had a similar experience.

Of course, people may also have thought from the date that this was an April Fools' Day joke.

I'm having a tough time with the topic as well. There have been a few notable events in the distant past but my blog does not cover those game systems or even that genre so it would be out of place. Those events I might use have already been documented as session write-ups. I'm still thinking about it but nothings coming to mind.

Ah.  I see.   Yes, I agree with you guys.  This turns out to be a more difficult topic than I expected.  I also wondered if people would assume it is an April Fools joke as well.

It's annoying because I thought it was actually really appropriate for April 1st.  But even I am having trouble with the topic.  For one thing, I realize, I don't really want to put my players in an unfavorable light.  That's why I added the bit about the NPCs.  But even then... it's hard.  Since I play the NPCs, it's difficult to recall a time when I had them do something just outright foolish.  Thus far my villains have been crafty, and clever.   Well, there are some events in my back story I think I can rely on.

Anyway, thanks for getting back to me.  At least it wasn't just some boneheaded problem with how I set it up.

I'll try to come up with an example as soon as I'm finished with my current blog entry, so at least we will have one, embarrassing as it is.

Conversely, maybe if no one answers at all... it will serve as an unintended April Fools joke after all.  On me, mostly.  Hehe.

I don't think there was anything wrong with the topic, per se - It's just that a lot of the content that might be used for it has already been done, and a lot of what remains has potential relationship problems with players. Perhaps expanding the topic (it's not too late to do so) to cover how you (as a GM) handle the situation when either you or the players do something stupid? Make it less about the event and more about the GMing after the event?
