                                ERRC SEEKS STAFF LAWYERS AND LEGAL FELLOWS

                              Staff Lawyers

                              The European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) seeks experienced lawyers to litigate Roma rights, ethnic/race discrimination and related cases in domestic, European and international tribunals.

                              The ERRC is a public interest law organisation that defends the human rights of Roma throughout Europe and serves as a legal resource centre for advocates working in this field. The ERRC pursues its objectives by engaging in legal representation, research, monitoring and reporting, human rights education and international advocacy. The ERRC's core legal work is to engage in impact litigation on behalf of Roma before both domestic and international courts.

                              Based in Budapest, the lawyers will work with the legal team to develop and implement legal strategy, handle selected cases, draft amicus curiae briefs and legal submissions to domestic and international dispute resolution fora, and will work with lawyers, judges, human rights organisations and other relevant institutions. The staff lawyers may also participate in or coordinate legislative and policy review and drafting, advocacy and lobbying, as well as training and public education on legal issues. Staff lawyers will also provide appropriate substantive input into research reports, donor reports and funding proposals.

                              Specifications

                              Essential Requirements:

                                a.. law degree from a country within the Council of Europe region;
                                b.. minimum of two years' litigation experience;
                                c.. demonstrable commitment to human rights;
                                d.. good understanding of human rights norms and their enforcement mechanisms at the regional and international levels, including familiarity with the European Convention and Court on Human Rights, European Social Charter and Committee on Social Rights, and UN Treaty bodies;
                                e.. demonstrable capacity to develop and apply successfully innovative legal strategies;
                                f.. ability to deal with time pressure and a demanding work environment;
                                g.. working knowledge of English, including ability to draft legal documents in English; and
                                h.. willingness to travel.
                              Preferred:

                                a.. bar membership from a country within the Council of Europe region;
                                b.. working knowledge of Romani language and/or other languages of Europe;
                                c.. experience in training/teaching human rights law and/or litigation skills;
                                d.. prior work experience with public interest organisations focusing on human rights;
                                e.. significant experience living or working in Romani communities.
                              Remuneration package:

                                a.. Remuneration depending on education, experience and demonstrated skills. ERRC also offers a fringe benefit package.

                              Legal Fellows

                              The European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) invites applications for its legal fellowship programme. Legal fellows will support ERRC lawyers for six to twelve months in litigating Roma rights, ethnic/race discrimination and related cases in domestic, European and international tribunals.

                              The ERRC is a public interest law organisation that defends the human rights of Roma throughout Europe and serves as a legal resource centre for advocates working in this field. The ERRC pursues its objectives by engaging in legal representation, research, monitoring and reporting, human rights education and international advocacy. The ERRC's core legal work is to engage in impact litigation on behalf of Roma before both domestic and international courts.

                              Based in Budapest, the legal fellows will work with the legal team:

                                a.. researching domestic and international law in the development of legal strategy;
                                b.. researching other Roma rights related issues in the development of litigation and legal advocacy documents;
                                c.. drafting legal documents;
                                d.. attending meetings and events related to the mission of ERRC and producing briefing documents;
                                e.. assisting in liaising with local partners;
                                f.. translating legal documents;
                                g.. ensuring effective management of legal files and documentation (archiving and ongoing);
                                h.. supporting lawyers’ training courses.
                              Specifications

                                c.. demonstrable excellent legal research skills;
                                d.. good understanding of human rights norms and their enforcement mechanisms at the regional and international levels, including familiarity with the European Convention and Court on Human Rights, European Social Charter and Committee on Social Rights, and UN Treaty bodies;
                                e.. ability to present written work clearly and accurately;
                                f.. ability to think creatively;
                                g.. ability to deal with time pressure and a demanding work environment; and
                                h.. good working knowledge of English and at least one of the following languages: Romani, Romanian, Slovak, Czech, Serbian, Macedonian, Italian, French, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish and Ukrainian.
                              Preferred:

                                a.. bar membership from a country within the Council of Europe region;
                                b.. experience in training/teaching human rights law and/or litigation skills;
                                c.. prior work experience with public interest organisations focusing on human rights;
                                d.. significant experience living or working in Romani communities.
