Opening Salvo:  “An Environmental Education”

Most educational programs in our colleges and universities probably include some science courses, but probably not an environmental course as a general educational requirement. This, and an ethics requirement for business majors, is woefully lacking in an educational system trying to survive into today’s economic world.  Note: I didn’t say that our institutions were not aligning ourselves with other world-class educational curriculums to produce students who will be able to complete in today’s market.  We may or may not be cranking out über breadwinners.  That may not be clear until the financial dust settles around the world.

But, whether or not you believe institutions of higher education exist for people to get high-paying jobs, fit into our society, know their cultures and others, or think well on their feet with a smart gadget in their hand, you must include graduates who can (and will) rationally assess the health of their environment.  In the September 2009 edition of Harpers <http://www.harpers.org/>  Magazine “Dehumanized, <http://www.harpers.org/#hbc-90005690>  When Math and Science Rule the School,” Mark Slouka makes the case that the humanities have suffered in our colleges as our country only focuses of what they think we need to compete.  In our strivings to compete, Slouka says, we are losing what is to best to be human.  I submit that we are also losing something more basic: the core of our existence.  For, whatever one’s beliefs or interests, we are among the billions of biological creatures on this planet that must have clean air, water, and land.

In today’s world of 6.5 billion people a well educated person should have a firm grasp of our biological underpinnings.  It may not get you a job, a mate, popularity, or allow you to be a stunning dinner speaker, but it will allow you to intelligently sift through news, environmental studies, and reports of early signs that our environmental systems are shutting down—as many argue they are.  The climate is warming (despite crazy radio talk rhetoric) along with acidification of the oceans, the loss of biodiversity, and much more. A people who cannot tell (or don’t even pay attention) that things are not going well with the system that keeps them alive is a people on their way out.

So, if you missed that day in college when your professor mentioned during a math or computer class that she wasn’t opening the windows that day because of an ozone alert, you might want to attend one of the many programs on the environment in our area this fall.  Check rochesterenvironment.com/calendar.htm.  There are a lot of good programs going on by non-profit groups, universities, and our local governments, including a lecture series to draw attention to important environmental topics by the town of Irondequoit.

Of course, we cannot make up for decades of not putting environmental studies high on the agenda in our universities, nor demand that a sizeable (for that is what it will take) portion of humanity to take note of the vast unhealthy changes we’ve made in the last couple of centuries.  We are a ‘free’ people, in pursuit of Happiness, Liberty, and just trying to get by.  But Mother Nature is a demanding parent: Ignorance of her laws will have no effect on her rules.  One of these programs might help your reconnect with Her.

*       9/12/09 - Think EPP Brownfield sites cleanup are not stringent enough, let them know:  EPA Seeks Comment on Greener Site Cleanups WASHINGTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is seeking public comment on a new strategy that would make cleanups at hazardous waste sites greener.  The Superfund Green Remediation Strategy is an initial effort to outline key actions and related activities that can be undertaken to promote green remediation and to reduce energy use.   EPA is taking comment on action items that fall into three major categories:  policy and guidance development, resource development and program implementation, and program evaluation.  The strategy also contains several recommendations including a call for EPA to implement a series of near-term program initiatives, and to establish a baseline of Superfund energy usage.  The public comment period is open for 60 days. Reducing the demands placed on the environment during cleanup of contaminated land is a high priority for EPA.  In addition to the new strategy, EPA has developed Principles for Greener Cleanups.  The principles call for EPA’s cleanup programs to use greener approaches during any phase of site work and establish the goal of evaluating cleanup actions to ensure protection of human health and the environment while reducing the environmental footprint of cleanup activities, when feasible.  Cleanups that do not satisfy threshold requirements for protectiveness or do not meet site specific cleanup objectives, are not considered greener cleanups. More <http://www.epa.gov/superfund/greenremediation>  information on the strategy:   View <http://service.govdelivery.com/service/edition.html?code=USAEPA_20&fo...>  all news releases related to hazardous waste
*       9/11/09 - Walking as Transportation: I know this seems radical, characterizing walking as transportation, in the same room as bus, car, planes, etc.  But, when you realize that most 'trips' in this county are 31/2 miles or less, walking is a healthy viable transportation mode.  And, the better you design your urban areas, the better you make changes in your urban area so that it become convenient to walk (and have time to smell ((and buy the roses in between)) the more environmentally friendly and safer your community becomes.  So, this news out of Henrietta, where they can use a lot more sidewalks is very refreshing: Where <http://www.mpnnow.com/homepage/x1420195174/Where-it-stands-New-sidewa...>  it stands: New sidewalks in Henrietta - Canandaigua, NY - MPNnow Henrietta, N.Y. — The issue Henrietta is filled with a mix of retail areas and residential neighborhoods — which creates a flurry of traffic. Supervisor Michael Yudelson — with the help of the Town Board — is trying to make the neighborhood more “walkable,” he says. Some streets, like Beaconsfield Road, Colonnade Drive and Commons Way, don’t have sidewalks, creating a potentially unsafe situation for pedestrians. The town is looking to change that. *       9/8/09 - Take the opportunity to join in the fate of our area's parks: Is Monroe County’s fiscal crisis putting our parks at risk? Public Meeting Monday, September 21, 2009 Nurturing natural monroe: the challenge of caring for county parks Master planning for County Parks has led to uses that threaten some parks’ long-term environmental health & beauty. In 2010, County planners will turn their attention to Powder Mills Park. Citizens need to be ready. Nora Bredes invites you to join NYS Assemblyman Steve Englebright chair of the assembly’s Committee on Tourism, Parks, Arts & Sports and NYS Assemblyman Joe morelle to discuss stewardship of our public parks September 21st 5:30 pm - 7 pm Wadham’s Lodge Powder Mills Park Park Road Pittsford, New York 14534 For more information, call Nora at 585/314-1597
*       9/7/09 - We want to applaud Monroe County's getting out in front on the possible pandemic issue in our area.  It may turn out to be a mild flu season this years, but it would be irresponsible not to be prepared otherwise.  Think seriously of using a hand sanitizer before you hand get near your face and check out all warnings, cautions, and information from this site: Public Health | <http://www.monroecounty.gov/health-pandemicflu.php>  Monroe County, NY Pandemic Flu | "Bird Flu. Pandemic Flu. These terms - confusing as they can be - are seemingly in the news daily.  Monroe County, with our partners at the local, state and federal level has been working aggressively to develop and test plans so we can be sure that we respond effectively. While we all hope we never have to face such a health emergency, I want to assure you that if our community ever does encounter Pandemic Flu, we will deal with it like we have with all other emergencies."

*       Cordwood Sauna Workshop September 26th & 27th, 2009  WHO  - Peter Turkow,  Co-Founder of Rochester Green Living  After seeing an article on cordwood construction in Mother Earth News my father, Dave Turkow attended a Rob Roy cordwood workshop (http://www.cordwoodmasonary.com)) in 1984. In 1985 we broke ground on a 40ft diameter, round, load-bearing cordwood home covered with geodesic dome, I was hooked. In 1996 we designed and built 2 story cordwood workshop/garage approx 32x22 with 22x10ft deck. More details can be seen @:  www.daycreek.com/dc/HTML/Turkow.htm <file:///F:\www.daycreek.com\dc\HTML\Turkow.htm>  WHAT – Each day is a mixture of classroom and hands-on activities & building. Classroom sessions include general cordwood home AND sauna information, power point presentations, and discussions on the various styles of cordwood building, as well as, the different types of wood species (and how long to dry them). *        <http://newyork.sierraclub.org/rochester/Former_Programs/Picture_Tour_...> A Picture Tour Through Time of Rochester's Park Preservation On Saturday, October 3rd, the Sierra Club is hosting its annual Fall program which will focus on the history of land and park preservation in Rochester. The program will be held at the Tay House Lodge just behind the #1 Elementary School on Hillside Ave. in Rochester. Our guest speaker, Larry Champoux, has delved into the history and assembled fascinating information about how our City's land preservation movement developed and how we came to have so many beautiful parks. He has assembled wonderful early photos of Rochester to illustrate the history and the changes over the past 100 years. Of particular interest will be photos of the Cobb's Hill Park area showing the old canal and the old bridge over it on Culver Rd, the boat factory where the Armory now is, and pictures showing the construction of the reservoir. Supplementing the slide talk, there will be a guided hike offered in the afternoon to learn about the Sierra Club's work to restore and protect the forest at the Washington Grove behind Tay House. You can learn about how the Grove got its name, why the old oaks could disappear and how invasive Norway maples could take over if nothing is done to change things. The guided hike starts at 4:30 pm, and all ages are invited. Pizza and refreshments will be offered (suggested donation $10/ person) starting at 5:30 and the slide-talk will begin at 7 pm. *       October 24, 2009 is  <http://www.350.org/> INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE ACTION DAY, and is being coordinated by 350.org, the grassroots organizing brainchild of Bill McKibben. The idea is to mobilize grassroots groups all over the world to hold highly visible public / media events on 10/24/09. Each event should highlight the number 350—the maximum global atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (in parts per million- ppm) that is safe for the long term. We are already up to 387, and increasing. For more details: http://www.350.org/  We need to do something in Rochester, and to be worth doing, it should be a coordinated effort between several groups, and something creative, eye-catching…. Media-worthy! That’s the point—to have media worldwide show that there is a groundswell of popular support for a global treaty (successor to Kyoto), and that therefore world leaders must craft a plan to bring levels down to 350 ppm by the time they leave the international climate talks in Copenhagen in December of this year. Are you interested in helping? If this is to be done, we would need people to: • Reach out to other groups/ organizations to see what they are doing, and try to coordinate (for all I know, there is already an effort planned that we could work with) • Be creative- come up with a good location / “shtick” to make it media-worthy • Recruit others • Contact media
