Subject: Sept. 10th Roch. Sierra Club News & Events

Good morning, Rochester Sierrans,

CALL TO ACTION!!  The city leaders in Jamestown continue to push for the new coal plant.  (see details in email of 6/24/09)  Please contact Senator Schumer and ask him to STOP SUPPORTING this irresponsible project.  We suggest sending letters as the way to have the greatest impact, but any method of contacting him is better than nothing.

Talking points are as follows:

Senator Schumer needs to work aggressively with Jamestown to develop a clean and less expensive alternative plan which would:
1.  permanently shut down the existing coal-burning facility
2.  meet the 10% of the Jamestown rate-payers electric load not now met with a combination of energy efficiency and conservation, wind energy (only a few turbines would be required), and occassional purchases off the NYISO Western Zone grid, if necessary.
3.  provide heat to Jamestown's district heating loop by alternative means

Senator Schumer's contact information is:

SENATOR CHARLES SCHUMER
313 HART SENATE OFFICE BUILDING WASHINGTON DC 20510
      (202) 224-6542

Two good ideas for getting outdoors on Saturday, Sept. 19th -

Join Hugh Mitchell of the Roch. Sierra Club for an outing to the old Girl Scout Camp - Beechwood, near Sodus Point.  It contains one of the finest stands of old growth trees on the Lake Ontario shore.  Meet at the lower parking lot of the First Unitarian Church, 220 Winton Road South at 9:15am.  Bring normal hiking gear, camera or binoculars.  Level of difficulty:  EASY

                                                                                     OR

The Penfield Trails Committee would love your help with trail maintenance on Saturday, Sept. 19th from 9AM - Noon.  They will be working on the East Side Wetlands Trail  (click below and scroll to the bottom for directions and a map)
