Dear Margaqret and Ariel,

The details going back to 1189 on the de la Roche family would be of
greatest interest to me.

I have been trying to find out more about the Gilbert de la Roche, who
granted a manor to a William Nicholas about 1280 in Roundway Wiltshire, and
whose daughter Dionisia's great granddaughter married into this Nicholas
family. Perhaps yor records have something on him.

Best regards,

Bill

Hello Joe

The Normans from France invaded Ireland in the 12th century thus most people in Ireland named Roche are descendants. The Normans were descended from a North Germanic race who settled in France & gave their name to Normandy (an area in northern France)

Thus those in Ireland with the Roche surname, many of whom emigrated to north America (as your father did) and elsewhere in the world including the UK, will have no recent link with those in France with the surname Roche.

I would caveat one thing in that those of us from Ireland with the name "Roche", are not necessarily descended from the first Norman Roches.  Many peasants took the names of the Lords in the area, including Roche.

Hi Margaret

The name was Armand ( not Armond) - and yes I am related to them, by a brother of an ancestor

Your went to Mauristius and got married there, so their descendants I guess still live there and became Mauricians...

My side stayed in Brittany .... I am the one who emmigrated, but I was born in France - that why I have perfect French and I am living in Ireland for many years now, so I have a very decent English too

Hi Joe

Yes it is possible .... but obviously mix with Irish - You probably know that England and Ireland have been colonised and taken over by the Plantgenet king Henry II in the 12the century and from then on a lot of French ( from Normandy and Brittany) cam over an were given lands and territories by this king and his descendants ( john the first famous by the robin Hood story ) was one of his son...

here are a few websites to help you

/pages/home.aspx

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlkik/ihm/irename2.htm

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlkik/ihm/invasion.htm

ps: it does not mean you are an aristocrate as many farmers took the Lords 's name

sort of a clan thing, but not necessaraly blood related to him

Regards

Britt

Hi. I am a great grandson of Gabriel living in South Africa. I would be really interested in the details you mention back to 1197.
