Subject: Robofab NoneLab test fails

Hi there,

I'm just getting started with Robofab.  I'm trying to use it in
"NoneLab" mode, ie. I don't have FontLab.

My goal is to figure out how to write a new .ufo file, then convert
it to .ttf.  I'm using robofab, ufo2fdk and the Adobe FDK on OS X.
I'm successfully writing a .ttf file, but OS X's "Font Book" utility
won't open the font, which suggests it is corrupt, incomplete or
otherwise invalid.

   I'm using this script:

https://gist.github.com/2560855

   Which prints this output:

https://gist.github.com/2560880

And it writes this ttf file:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/xs8o1c6mqbpgisc/Lj_TxoN7N3/testFamily-Roma...

My script is pieced together from the examples on http://robofab.org/.
Unfortunately, none of the examples describe how to write create/
configure a font object from scratch, ie. that isn't read or
interpolated from an existing font file.

I'm wondering if I'm doing something obviously wrong.  Any help
would be appreciated.

Thanks,
   Charles

Charles,

Not that this is the answer, but one thing is that for the FDK to make a TrueType font, you can't run the FDK autohinter, as it's for PostScript, not TrueType hints. You might want to start with trying to make a Postscript flavored OpenType font first, then try to bend the UFO2FDK into making a TrueType font. TrueType support in the FDK is very new, so I don't know if UFO2FDK really has the necessary hooks to make a TTF. Again, this is all off the top of my head, so take it with several lumps of salt.

Thanks for the advice, Ben.  You helped me realized that I was
making a beginner's mistaking - writing an OpenType file with a ".ttf"
extension instead of ".otf".  That's why Font Book was refusing to
open it.

And kudos to the Robofab team for building such a useful project.
