Subject: Bugs Info!!!!
Hi;
We are two couples who are comming to Roatan next summer for two
weeks and we have some concerns about our timming. We were in Belieze a
couple of years ago and discovered that both of our wives are extreamly
allergic to Sand Flies, (fleas?), and these critters like our wives
extreamly well also. So, my question is, which months are we going to
have the least chance of encountering these pests and how does that
compare with low and high season there. We are thinking of comming in
May, June or July. Please give me your opinions.
            Thanks,
                  Ray

Hi Ray,

Expect sandflies all year--any time of the year--all over the
tropics--and other sorts of buggy critters that bite as well.  Anything
else anyone tells you is just fibbing for $$.

That said, bugs need water to live--so wetter months are also buggier.
On Roatan Winter months are the wettest. We also get a weird weather
thing that typically brings us rain in July as well. However, this year
we didn't get our July rains until now. So who knows?

Tropical weather is VERY unpredictable.

Also breezes blow them away--so staying on the windward side of the
island works best.  On Roatan that's the south shore in non-bay
(swampy) areas.

Also, everything in the jungle feeds heavily right before the sun
sets--and right after it rises each day.  Staying behind screens during
these times can reduce bites dramatically.

All that said, people with allergies should wear high concentrated DEET
spray at all times. Deep woods Off is easy to find and works well.

We spray beaches here--if that matters--<grins> we think it does!!!
And we're on the windward side of the island.

However, all of that said, if guests come in rainy season/winter
months--and we get a lull in breezes before a storm--then they INSIST
on sitting ON the sand (we have lounge chairs) without wearing ANY
spray--they'll get bitten here too! Worst rainy months on Roatan (when
our beach spray just gets washed away faster than we put it down) are
end of Dec-Jan--which are oddly ALWAYS sold out times around here with
snow birds from up North fleeing ice and arriving here in hordes!
ARRRG!

Anyway, we hope this helps!
