I'm about to start hooking up UoW on my project - someone mentioned
that it's possible that commons won't be maintained anymore - is this
true?
If this is the case - what are people using to get UoW from now on?

This is true unless someone is going to step up to take responsibility for them.
They are currently in sleep mode, they aren't deprecated, but there is no one working on them.
Both have been used in dozens of projects and have proven very stable, so I wouldn't worry overmuch about this.
