Welcome to the future of cycling in River Heights, Corydon and Osborne. We want to identify problems and find their solutions to eliminate barriers and to create a paradise for people who choose cycling as a fun, healthy and sustainable form of transportation.

This "Google Group" was created to keep an open dialogue, to keep a record of our progress and to share important information relevant to our area.

NOTE:  This first meeting will be a joint meeting with our friends in River Heights-Corydon-Osborne. Due to recent exciting funding announcements and the due date for an exciting city-wide AT plan being bumped up to February, we will be focusing on infrastructure improvements. Other concerns, such as bike parking, incentive programs, etc.. are important, but must necessarily take a back seat to this important agenda item.

Announcement: The City of Winnipeg is currently in the planning stages of a city-wide active transportation network. For the first time, the City of Winnipeg has included an on-road "active transportation corridors" line item in the budget. That means bike lanes, intersection treatments, etc.. for cyclists. Where in the Southwest needs them? Have your say!

Here is the rationale behind the look and feel of the above mentioned maps. Although we may choose to do things somewhat differently, in light of the progress and impact made be the groups that have gone through this process, we should probably  retain the basic design elements and route rationale.

The green routes represent low-traffic options for people who feel uncomfortable cycling in heavy traffic. The network of green routes requires the application of designs such as multi-use trails, bike boulevards, curb-separated bike lanes - - ideally infrastructure which you would feel comfortable seeing a 10-year old kid use.

The purple routes are geared toward people who are comfortable being "traffic", and the suggested improvements would usually be on the road itself (without a physical separation) - - painted bike lanes, intersection treatments, wide-curb lanes, sharrows - - - all implemented as necessary.

Cycling is, of course, welcome and expected on all streets and users may reasonably be expected to combine elements of either type of cycling route in a day’s journey. Routes should be chosen to minimize conflicts with motorized-vehicles and pedestrians. The infrastructure enhancements on the purple and green routes are meant to be well-integrated with the rest of the "untreated" roads infrastructure and with each other. Note that the purple network and the green network are designed to each stand alone as a usable network. This ensures that we don't leave novice cyclists stranded and ensures maximum reliability and usefulness for everyone.

To assure an uncluttered looking map, a reasonable goal, and equal access, the routes are roughly chosen to provide access within at least 800m of every home.

Review the commentary already expressed.

Of our two groups, Southwest has been the most busy on-line.

For example, check out the interesting and simple solution to Pembina Jubilee involving a bridge between the two bridges. Check out the map created to draw attention to an interesting and pleasant alternative to Pembina for those traveling to the U of M. There was some discussion of the possibility of routing a multi-use path on the golf course that has been bought by the University.

While our recommendations and the planned maps need not be our final decision, the better our proposal is by Feb.13th, the more wisely can the City of Winnipeg approach cycling projects, and, even more importantly, justify the funding necessary to implement them.

Note that, as we move forward, if an idea hits a roadblock, we can find alternatives. If a project is moved forward, and local expertise or guidance is needed, we would be able to offer that knowledge and insight.

A large-scale vision of a bicycle infrastructure network is crucial to providing context for individual projects that might otherwise seem isolated or localized in effect. When the vision incorporates the wisdom of experienced users, and the effort of local people in consideration of everyone’s needs, it accelerates the process of community buy-in and increases our chances of success.
