| 60 years of Indian Parliament have been a mixed package of honour, shame, dignity, lies and deceit. Democracies only survive if the people fight for it and don't accept the wrongs of their leaders. Is a weak democracy the road to dictatorship? And then again, the question remains whether a leader who takes decisions disregarding the wishes of people for better governance is good for the country or is it better to have an equitable democracy where consensus is sometimes too difficult to achieve? |
Allan J. Lichtman is Professor and Chair of the Department of History at American University in Washington, D.C. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1973. He has written six books on issues including American History and Election Systems. He has been a Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the California Institute of Technology. His areas of expertise include election prediction; presidential and congressional campaigns; voting behavior; public opinion and party conventions amongst others.
