Subject: What's the status of the garbage collector?
Hey guys,

Interesting work on the new engine... I read your papers and am
concerned about the 4000% storage/memory penalty that is paid for an
append-only system. I am currently using MySQL and thinking about
RethinkDB after having switched over to SSD drives. Here are a few
questions:

- What progress have you made in the area of garbage collection within
the last year?
- Is RethinkDB production-ready for a social networking site, given
the access and usage patterns expected from such a site?
- What hardware specs would you recommend?
- How long may 32GB SSDs last, give n the append-only db system?

Thanks.

This is out of date - our current system is significantly more
efficient. The garbage collector isn't ready yet, but when it will be,
this penalty will be invisible to the end users.

No, RethinkDB isn't production ready yet. It will take another six-
eight months before we can begin doing production pilots.

It really depends on your workloads - there is no single spec that's
good for everyone. Please e-mail me directly (sl...@rethinkdb.com)
with your infrastructure details, and I'll be able to give better
advice. Also, if you could take a few minutes to fill out our survey
at http://rethinkdb.com/survey, it would really help us build a better
product that suits your needs.

It depends on the SSD and the workloads. We don't have degradation
numbers yet, but our preliminary findings suggest that a good SSD will
outlive a rotational drive on most common workloads.
