Read more Educating, engaging, and empowering in 2012: The 20th anniversary of empowerment More than 2,000 community members, activists, dignitaries, elected officials, and religious leaders registered to attend the 20th Annual Empowerment Congress Summit hosted by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and the Empowerment Congress on the University of Southern California’s campus, Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend. Read more   The Martin Luther King, Jr. Multi-Service Ambulatory Care Center mural - A community undertaking Watts, Willowbrook, and Compton residents met to give their input to the artists who will design the Martin Luther King Multi- Service Ambulatory Care Center walkway at a creative workshop at the Hudson Auditorium in Willowbrook. The workshop was held to encourage community members to share their thoughts and ideas both pictorially and verbally for what they would like to see on panels that will make up the 800-foot-long panel at the Martin Luther King Multi-Service Ambulatory Care Center. Read more Empowering future leaders through dialogue While civil rights leader and activist Rev. Al Sharpton was speaking to a rapt audience at the University of Southern California’s Bovard Auditorium during the 20th Anniversary Summit of the Empowerment Congress, a gathering of a different kind was occurring across campus. A diverse group of 250 children, youth and chaperones convened the 2012 Youth Summit. Participants, ranging from first graders to high school seniors, engaged in a dialectic approach modeled after “Days of Dialogue,” a series of conversations between cultural groups born in the wake of the 1992 civil unrest. The day’s event was entitled, “Youth Empowered: Celebrating Our Heritage, Strengthening Our Community.” .
