My name is Jonathan Kumar and I am one of the organizers for TEDxUofM.
I was referred to you by the committee over at a2makerFaire who
recommended that I see your work. I would like to explore an
opportunity for you to exhibit your 3D printing device at TEDx Labs
this upcoming April 10 at TEDxUofM.
TEDxUofM is a student organization on campus with an official license
from the TED Foundation. Our first event will be an all-day experience
at the University of Michigan’s Biomedical Research Center centered on
the theme “Do You Realize?”
TEDx is different from anything this university has seen before. We
are inviting our attendees to discover. Indeed, much of our event
including the speaker lineup will not be known to our guests. We want
to encourage collaboration between all disciplines and give an
experience displaying the university’s most engaging thinkers and
doers who have “ideas worth spreading.”
Between speakers, there will be frequent breaks in the common area. We
are looking to have exhibitions and presenters during that time. I
feel that your exhibition could fit in perfectly with our vision for
the event, especially for the "wow" factor. What do you think? Feel
free to contact me back at jtku...@gmail.com. Looking forward to
hearing back from you guys.
Regards,
Jonathan Kumar, TEDx Labs
Exciting!

Sounds great!

I'm very interested in our group attending!
There are three of us with working machines at the moment, a few more
with machines that might be convinced to work by the time of the
event. Each machine will require a few square feet of table space,
and room for a laptop or desktop computer to control it, as well as
electrical outlets for all. We can bring extension cords. Two
full-length folding tables might be enough space. Will that be an
issue?
The members with working machines at the moment are myself, Nick
McCoy, and Dean Piper. Devin McPherson has a machine that is close,
and we have a member or two who own Makerbots (their names escape me
at the moment).
Count me in. I'll get in touch with the others ASAP, if they don't
respond individually here first.

But WOW... They sure don't make it easy for you to get data on this event!
(Don't you just love it, when they don't bother to give you ALL of the info
about an event, like open/close/presentation TIMES(s), LOCATION, etc... ??? <sigh>)
I did some digging on the group. Even their website doesn't state the DETAILS,
though it "references" the BRB (Biomedical Research Building) in their banner,
IMPLYING it is happening there...
But although their website banner ad states BRB, their FACEBOOK entry says
it is at only from 5:10 to 7:10 PM at the UM Museum of Art, so we definitely
need some clarification so we know what is up with this event.
Here is what I found so far (and some background, for those unfamiliar with TED):
1) TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is where the world's leading thinkers
and doers gather to share ideas worth spreading.
... http://www.ted.com
2) TEDx is a series of independently organized events, based on the TED model.
3) TEDxUofM *apparently* is a UM student group, that produces such events.
... http://tedxuofm.com/
They SEEM to be located in the Biomedical Research Building,
109 Zina Pitcher Place, Ann Arbor, MI (Corner of Huron and Washtenaw...)
... http://www.med.umich.edu/bsrb/
HOWEVER, directory.umich.edu does NOT list them as a registered Student Group...
4) TEDxUofM will be holding a TEDx event on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at:
**** the University of Michigan Museum of Art ***
5) I finally FOUND them, on FACEBOOK:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=319011902164&index=1
TEDxUofM 2010 - "Do You Realize?":
Type: Causes -
Date: Saturday, April 10, 2010
Time: 5:10pm - 7:10pm
Location: University of Michigan Museum of Art
..."You can bring a friend"...
Now, I'm unsure if this is a full day display with just TALKS being given in
the late PM, or what.
**** Tim ****
Can you please ask them what is up with this event??? We need more DETAILS.
Ex: We need a better idea of WHEN. WHERE (BRB, or MofA), exactly what to bring
(do we need a PowerPoint for a talk, etc...), HOW we participate (table demo only,
are we scheduled for a PowerPoint talk, etc.), cost to attend, are RSVPs needed
for guests (and their cost), what do WE do for parking there, etc., etc...
FYI - As this is on main campus, AFAICD there is NO free parking there.
Only >$1/hour VERY short term meters, purchased permit parking, etc.,
so the parking question is definitely important.
Thanks!
- Keith Mc.
AH, I finally found them as a student group, under "TEDx Foundation", not "TEDxUofM"...
... http://uuis.umich.edu/maizepgs/view.cfm?orgID=10006923
It says they are out of the Michigan Union (where many student orgs have offices...)
So that now brings us back to the question of whether this is at the
BRB, the UM Museum of Art, or is something happening at BOTH locations?
