Termites

Our house had a history of termites with the previous owners. (Truthfully, it had a history of EVERY pest with the previous owners. Yuck.) We recently had one of the major termite services inspect our home and yard as a maintenance precaution. 

Our house showed no evidence of new termites, but we have a woodpile about 40 feet from the house that does have active termites in it. I've been wanting to get rid of the woodpile anyway, but the termite guy said if I remove that source of food they'll spread out looking for more food and are likely to come to the house. 

Does anyone know of a way to spot treat a termite colony in the yard that seems to be isolated to the wood pile? I've been reading about the limited effectiveness of retail termite baits and I'm wondering if I have an alternative to paying several thousand dollars for a full pest control treatment.

Kelli:  Termites are everywhere.   Always have been.

I don't think you need to pay for monthly treatments. I would just watch for the mud tunnels. Have an inspection now and then and treat when necessary. http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef604.asp
