If you are going custom or making your own (good suggestion, Chaden), a more accurate and useful shape might be worth considering.  Rather than a "#"-shaped curtain ring, I would suggest what is called a "D"-shape shower rod.  This shape has two standoffs attached to the back wall.  The front of the ring is hung from the ceiling with a center rod.  This shape allows for greater freedom/flexibility in shower curtain position.

Here's an example http://www.vandykes.com/28x63-chrome-d-type-shower-rod/p/209804/

You could probably fabricate such a rod from copper pipe with standard fittings and practice your copper sweating skills, too.  Scuff with steel wool or sandpaper, prime and paint with an exterior enamel spray paint - this would probably get you most of the way towards what you are looking for, but probably not with the quite the same longevity.

Post pictures if you DIY!

Steve

Subject: {RenovateDSM} Recap after Saturday's meeting

       Hi Rehabbers!
We had a great meeting on Saturday! Thanks so much to Doug Bown for hosting! I'll get some pictures up on the website and the Facebook group soon.

I talked with several of you there about recommendations for local craftsmen for various jobs. I didn't take good enough notes to remember who suggested what, so I thought I'd recap what we discussed and hope that you'll email me back with the details so I can get them into the RenovateDSM.com recommended contractors list. Even if you're reading this and I didn't talk to you specifically, send me your recommendations! I have a need for all of these things and welcome any suggestions for who to hire!

There were three categories I discussed with different people:

Iron/metal workers who could possibly make a custom shower curtain ring for a clawfoot tub:
Someone mentioned Village Blacksmith in Valley Junction.

A woodworker in Des Moines who makes custom wood window sashes:
Possibly located somewhere on Maury east of E 14th? If you have more details, send them along!

Concrete/mason workers who can pour a set of concrete steps, reconstruct the brick around them, and tuckpoint the brick along the foundation:
Any suggestions that aren't already on the RenovateDSM.com list are welcome!

Thanks, guys. And sorry for my sketchy memory. Saturday was a busy day!

       -Kelli Griffis

We ordered an oversize one for a clawfoot tub from

Been really happy with it. Quality chromed tubing and mounting hardware.

Also for metal fab and other things try

Boonie, the owner, is in the Drake Neighborhood and has mentioned custom railings as well other projects. Might be willing to do a shower ring.

Ooh, that is an interesting design! I'm glad I asked for advice. You guys came up with ideas I'd never even considered!

As much as I'd love to learn some new skills and make it myself, I'm elbows deep in my window project. Dear husband has waited patiently but I need to get moving on this.

Maybe you can help me with another question. I've never worked with a metal smith. How do they usually like to have a project presented to them? Obviously I'd have specific measurements and a sketch or photograph of what I'm looking for, but is there anything more I should know about requesting custom metal work?

Thanks,
Kelli
