"Universalism, Relativism and Intercultural Philosophy"
International Conference
Department of Classics and Philosophy, University of Cape Coast
Council for Research in Values and Philosophy
Cape Coast (Ghana)
3-5 February 2010
RATIONALE:
It is obvious that technological advances over the centuries have
expanded, intensified and deepened communication between communities,
cultures and civilizations in a manner that has transformed the
context in which communities hitherto existed, making cooperative and
competitive exchanges and relations to be increasingly on a
trans-cultural basis. This presents both a challenge and an
opportunity to philosophy: it challenges every philosophy to rethink
its assumptions, preferences, postulations, standards and insights in
the light of those of other cultures; and an opportunity to enlarge
our perception of reality by incorporating perspectives from other
cultures that enable us achieve a higher synthesis epistemologically,
axiological and so on. This conference aims at bringing philosophers,
as well as other scholars, together to find ways of meeting this
challenge and exploiting the opportunity.
THEME: Universalism, Relativism and Intercultural Philosophy
Sub themes:
1. The Meaning and Nature of Intercultural Philosophy
2. Universalism and Relativism in Philosophy: Nature, Problems and
Contemporary Significance

5. Truth, Knowledge and the Clash of Civilizations
6. Ethics, Aesthetics and Intercultural Philosophy

Philosophy
8. Universalism, Relativism and Intercultural Philosophy: Social,
Educational, Political and Economic Implications

"Veiled Constellations: The Veil, Critical Theory, Politics, and
Contemporary Society"
Interdisciplinary Conference
York University
Toronto, ON (Canada)
3-5 June 2010
This conference offers a forum to problematize the prevailing
discourses surrounding the veil while exploring the veil's subversive
potential. The extent to which the veil can erode, or even invert
power and oppression is, with the exception of various Islam-inspired
positions, an overlooked and under-explored area of academic
theorizing. We ask what new insights may be unearthed in moving
beyond the impetus to repudiate, fear, or adore the veil. This
conference is a unique opportunity to discuss those contested voices
situated within the interstices of the liberal, conservative and
Islamic constellations, and, in the process, to re-evaluate the veil
in an entirely new light by intersecting multiple disciplinary
perspectives. Perhaps as importantly, we see the appraisal of
critical theory in moving theory beyond the mainstream discursive
impasse as central to epistemological responsibility and
accountability. This event will highlight highly innovative and
thought-provoking approaches to not only the Islamic veil, but the
veil as such. We envision the rich insights of critical inquiry as an
under-utilized terrain that may help unpack the current intellectual
discourse on the veil. Essentially, we seek a different kind of
conversation and a different set of lexical and philosophical devices
to navigate the many paradoxes that the veil represents.

ETPC - Existential Theory, Phenomenology and Culture
Conference: May 31 - June 3, 2010
Concordia University, Montreal, Canada
Irigaray argues that her mature thought is a natural continuation of
her
early project of a philosophically relevant re-awakening and
articulation
of a lost sense of sexual difference. However, Irigaray scholars
often
struggle with her later work. Although, there is a general agreement
that
Irigaray?s writing has developed over time, there is some dispute as
to
the significance of this change. Further, her critics point to a lack
of
robust framework for dealing with issues of race, ethnicity, gender
and
sexuality. There is concern that Irigaray?s recent ethical and
political
project is no longer relevant. For these reasons some commentators
have
dismissed Irigaray?s later writing as naive, while others defend the
continuity of her oeuvre and the positive project of her mature work.
This panel will offer an opportunity for focused engagement with
Irigaray?s later work, including the question of continuity in her
thought. This CFP invites papers that critically examine Irigaray?s
evolving ethical and political vision for a shared world that both
reflects and does justice to the reality of sexual difference.
Possible
topics for discussion include, but are not limited to:
sexuate rights
nature, environmentalism and ecology
the human and non-human
race, ethnicity and/or culture
education
maternity, the couple and the family
queer, trans and intersex
the future
Participants will have thirty minutes in which to present their
paper.
This will be followed by a short commentary of approximately 10
minutes,
leaving time for a 20-minute question period.
Please submit:
a copy of your paper (4500 word maximum; prepared for blind review
in .doc
or .rtf format)
an abstract of your paper (not to exceed 150 words)
an information sheet, including: your name, contact information
(including
email and telephone), institutional affiliation and status, and the
title
and word count of your paper
Submission deadline: January 1, 2010

The Transfiguration of the Present: Reflections on Historical
Distance"
Groningen January 28-29, 2010
The distinction between past and present is a neglected problem in
the
theory of history. How does the present present transform into a past
present? Is contemporary history a contradictio in terminis? Why can?
t
we make our Zeitgeist visible? What kind of historical estrangement
is
needed for achieving ?distance?? What does ?historical distance? mean
in the first place? The relevance of the work of Frank Ankersmit to
the answering of these questions will be discussed during an
international conference at Groningen (Netherlands) by a variety of
well-known speakers, including Mark Bevir, Hans Kellner, Jorn Rusen,
Aviezer Tucker, and John H. Zammito. The conference "The
Transfiguration of the Present: Reflections on Historical Distance"
will take place at the University of Groningen on January 28-29,
2010.
All sessions will be open to the public. Please register before
December 15, 2009 by e-mail to m.r.b.w...@rug.nl. Further

14th Australasian David Nicol Smith Seminar in Eighteenth-Century
Studies
Melbourne
4 - 8 July 2011
The David Nicol Smith seminar in Eighteenth-Century Studies is a long-
running
quadrennial conference. Over the years, it has spawned many
influential
publications. We hope our 14th seminar will be the same. Inaugurated
and supported
by the National Library of Australia, the Nicol Smith is the major
Australasian
showcase for inter-disciplinary professional and academic discussion
on eighteenth-
century studies. The conference attracts scholars across all the
Humanities'
disciplines of history, literature, art history, and musicology,
studies of material
culture and anthropology and archaeology. The conference embraces
every aspect of
life, politics and culture during the 'Long Eighteenth Century',
circa 1688 to 1815.
The conveners are shortly to negotiate special deals with selected
hotels in the
heart of the city of the Melbourne. Expect to come to a conference in
one of the
most livable cities in the world, a great nineteenth-century city,
staying amid bars
and restaurants, and living and breathing the eighteenth-century in
discussions held
amid great collections.
Please use the online Abstract form for your submissions.
Abstracts should be between 200-300 words in length.

The editors of the Dictionary of Early American Philosophers, a
multi-volume biographical reference work planned to compliment the
Dictionary of Modern American Philosophers (2005), are now assigning
articles for some remaining figures.
We seek authors for the following thinkers, mostly in legal theory,
political science, economics, sociology and history. The due date is
February 2010. The length of articles is negotiable. Short articles
(up to 1000 words) pay $30, medium articles (1000-2500 words) pay
$50,
and long articles (over 2500 words) pay $100.
Because this is a work about philosophical thinking, some analysis of
the philosophical content and implications of each figure s writing
is
required, alongside the usual academic biography.
Information about reference works on these figures is available at
http://www.pragmatism.org/deap/
