Computer Parts Database

A couple of years ago we moved from paper to an in-house developed
point-of-sale solution (which we're going to open source in the next
few months). When we began the project I talked to one contact who
mentioned he had done the same for a company and rather than create
their own barcodes the used an existing database of barcodes for
computer parts. Does anyone know about this? It would be nice to
import the database rather than creating our own data.
